Blue Raider Softball Fends off Brescia for Non-Conference Sweep

OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Blue Raider softball team shutdown Brescia (Ky.) in game one before outlasting the Bearcats in game two to record a non-conference sweep at Jack C. Fisher Park.

Lindsey Wilson compiled 15 runs on 22 hits, including four each from Kaiden Rodgers and Brooklynn Becker. The visitors also received offensive contributions from Atavya Fowler, Nora Epley, and Sam Hartman, who all produced three hits and combined for seven runs batted-in.

In the circle, Hallie Roberts and K'Asia Palmer picked up wins, while Kayden Murray earned her first save of the season in game two.

Game One: Lindsey Wilson 6, Brescia 0

Roberts dealt a two-hit, complete-game shutout to get the day started in game one. The freshman recorded a career-best nine strikeouts as she held the hosts hitless in six out seven innings.

With Roberts' strong pitching pacing the defense, it was up to the offense to find a spark.

The scoring commenced in the second inning when an infield grounder off the bat of Brylee Pickerell scored Rodgers from third base. Later in the frame, Becker singled to the middle infield, then eventually scored after an attempt to catch her stealing at second base when into the outfield.

Fowler was responsible for Lindsey Wilson's next four runs. First, in the third inning, on a 1-0 count, she rocketed a solo home run over the left field fence. Two innings later, with Epley aboard on a walk, Fowler again sent a ball deep to the outfield. This time, the Bearcat leftfielder tracked it down to Fisher Park's makeshift fence but could not pull it into her glove. Seeing this, head coach Callum Pilgrim did not hesitate to wave Fowler around the bags for an inside-the-park home run.

Fowler is the first Blue Raider to hit two home runs in a game since Pickerell on March 23, 2024, and the first to hit one inside-the-park since Natalie Wandrie on March 12, 2024.

Despite being denied a chance at a third home in the seventh inning after being hit by a pitch, Fowler still found a way across home plate off an RBI-double by Hartman.

Game Two: Lindsey Wilson 9, Brescia 6

The Blue Raiders scored seven of their nine runs across the first three innings of game two.

In the first frame, Rodgers dropped a bases-loaded single down the left field line to plate Epley. The following at-bat, Rodgers met another bases-loaded situation and drove in two more runs with a base-hit to the left field grass.

Katie Lorenz and Fowler also added to the scoring in the second inning with respective hits that each scored one run.

Leading by a handful, Lindsey Wilson tacked on two more in its half of the third frame. Epley tallied the first on a double ripped through the left side, then Fowler continued her impressive day with a double of her own to bring home Epley.

Brescia began piecing together a rally in the fifth and sixth innings and managed to score six runs on eight hits during that span.

Facing a Bearcat team with new life, the Blue Raiders put the game away in the seventh with the help of a fielding error that gave way for Melaina Tucker and Pickerell to score.

Palmer, in just her second career start, secured the win in her hometown of Owensboro after pitching 5.0 innings, allowing five earned runs, and striking out two.

Murray, who checked on in relief in the sixth inning, kept Brescia without a hit in two innings of work and posted two strikeouts to move into 10th place all-time on the program's career strikeouts list.

Lindsey Wilson opens its Mid-South Conference schedule at 12 p.m. CST on Friday, March 14 when the Blue Raiders travel to Georgetown (Ky.).
