COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Blue Raider softball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader with No. 4 Cumberlands (Ky.) on Saturday afternoon at Sparks Park.
The Patriots were relentless at the plate, compiling 20 runs on 28 hits. Lindsey Wilson was led offensively by
Atavya Fowler,
Nora Epley, and
Sam Hartman, who each contributed two hits.
Game One: Lindsey Wilson 2, No. 4 Cumberlands (Ky.) 12 (5 Innings)
Cumberlands scattered its runs over the first, second, and fourth innings en route to run-rule decision in game one.
Similar to how they approached Friday's series-opener, the Patriots jumped out to 8-0 after their first two plate appearances.
Lindsey Wilson found a spark in its leg of the second inning as an infield error off the bat of
Brooklynn Becker, followed by an RBI-single from Epley scored
Natalie Wandrie and
Kaiden Rodgers to cut the deficit to 8-2.
The Patriots, however, went on to limit Lindsey Wilson to just two hits over the final three innings, helping them secure the win.
Hallie Roberts started in the circle for the Blue Raiders in game one and worked 1.1 innings while allowing five earned runs on five hits.
K'Asia Palmer dealt 3.2 innings of relief and picked up two strikeouts.
Game Two: Lindsey Wilson 0, No. 4 Cumberlands (Ky.) 8 (6 Innings)
Despite a promising start by the Blue Raiders and starter
Kayden Murray, the visitors showcased their experience to rally late in game two.
The top of the Patriots' lineup was held in check in the early stages of the contest, but the middle hitters got the better of the Lindsey Wilson defense and managed to push six runs across during the fifth and sixth innings.
A double by Epley in the bottom of the third frame and a two-out walk issued to Hartman was the Blue Raiders' best chance of ending the shutout bid. All told, Lindsey Wilson stranded seven runners on the bases.
Murray finished with four strikeouts over 5.2 innings pitched, moving her into sole possession of ninth-place all-time on the program's career strikeouts list. She also ended her outing with seven earned runs on a dozen hits.
Lindsey Wilson continues its homestand at 3 p.m. CST on Thursday, March 27 when Midway (Ky.) comes to Sparks Park for a non-conference doubleheader.
