LEBANON, Tenn. – The No. 5-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's tennis team secured a hard-fought 4-3 victory over No. 12 Cumberland (Tenn.) on Thursday evening at the Tommy Gray Memorial Courts. The Blue Raiders (9-3, 2-0 MSC) claimed the doubles point and earned three singles wins to remain unbeaten in conference play.
Marcal Miret provided the clinching at court No. 5 when the Blue Raiders were 3-2 up.
The match opened with doubles action, where Lindsey Wilson clinched the first team point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. The No. 39-ranked duo of Marcal Miret and Jaume Barcelo took a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles over Vitor Ferreira and Gabriel Godoy, leveling the score after Cumberland struck first at No. 3. Shortly after, the No. 13-ranked tandem of Santiago Passoni and Hans Schubert sealed the doubles point with a 6-4 victory at the top spot against Elisey Kalashnikov and Julian Parada, giving Lindsey Wilson a 1-0 lead.
Cumberland responded quickly in singles, tying the match at 1-1 after Paul-Daniel Meyer defeated No. 50-ranked Jaume Barcelo 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. The Phoenix then took their first lead of the day as Vitor Ferreira outlasted No. 13-ranked German Delcanto in a tight 7-5, 7-6 (10) battle at No. 2, making it 2-1 in favor of the hosts.
Lindsey Wilson rebounded with a crucial win at No. 1 singles, where Hans Schubert rallied past No. 51-ranked Daniel Wessels in a three-set thriller, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-4, evening the match at 2-2. The Blue Raiders then regained the lead at No. 4, as No. 14-ranked Santiago Passoni dominated Gabriel Godoy in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, putting Lindsey Wilson back in front, 3-2.
The clinching point came from No. 5 singles, where No. 29-ranked Marcal Miret delivered a commanding 6-2, 6-2 win over Hassan Ammar, securing the Blue Raider victory at 4-2. Cumberland picked up the final point of the match at No. 6, where Julian Parada edged Lucas Marques 7-5, 6-3, finalizing the 4-3 scoreline.
Lindsey Wilson returns home on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT to face SCAD-Atlanta (Ga.) at the Henry Baughman Tennis Complex.
