LIMA, Ohio – No. 8-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's tennis secured a 4-1 victory over No. 9-ranked Holy Cross (Ind.) on Wednesday morning at the Racer Invitational.
Santiago Passoni, ranked No. 18 nationally, clinched the win for the Blue Raiders with a straight-set victory over No. 13-ranked Oscar Wai at No. 4 singles.
The Blue Raiders (4-3) started strong by claiming two of the three doubles matches. Holy Cross struck first as the No. 1 doubles team of Hans Schubert and Passoni fell 6-3 to the No. 6-ranked pair of Perry Gregg and Luca McManus. Lindsey Wilson responded with a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles from Marcal Miret and Jaume Barcelo. The decisive doubles point was then secured by Lucas Marques and German Delcanto, who edged out a 7-6 (8-6) victory at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Holy Cross earned its lone point at No. 1 singles, where No. 12-ranked Perry Gregg defeated Schubert 6-1, 6-1. Miret extended the Blue Raiders' lead with a commanding 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles over No. 16-ranked Naithaolin Golmei. Marques followed up with a hard-fought 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) triumph at No. 6. Passoni then delivered the clinching point, defeating No. 13 Wai 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4 singles to seal the win for Lindsey Wilson.
The remaining singles matches were left unfinished. Delcanto led 7-5, 4-5 at No. 2 singles against McManus, while Barcelo was in the third set at No. 3 after rallying to win the second set 6-4.
The Blue Raiders will return to action at 1 p.m. CT on March 9 for their home opener against receiving votes St. Thomas (Fla.).
