Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Blue Raider Volleyball Downs Host; Sweeps Saturday Slate

FORT WORTH, Texas – The Lindsey Wilson volleyball team faced a pair of gritty non-conference opponents on its final day in The Longhorn State. Despite the challenges, the Blue Raiders collected two four-set victories to improve to 7-1 on the year.

Ola Wyrzykowska averaged 15.5 kills and 21.5 digs, setting a personal-best in the latter in the Blue Raiders' second match. Elsewhere, Petra Fernandez Garcia racked up 26 kills and 21 digs for the day, Luiza Gonçalves totaled 84 assists and 13 kills, Momo Hampton picked up 26 digs, and Ana Clara Beltran Sacca compiled 11 kills and a team-best eight blocks.

Match One: (RV) Lindsey Wilson 3, Rochester Christian (Mich.) 1

The Blue Raiders hit plus-0.200 with 50 kills and 10 service aces for the fifth consecutive match en route to a four-set win over the Warriors.

Wyrzykowska recorded a team-high 15 kills and 17 digs for her second double-double of the weekend and third of the season. Fernandez Garcia added 10 kills, and Sacca finished with eight kills and six blocks.

Rochester Chrisitan outkilled the Blue Raiders 13-11 in the first set but committed four more attacking errors, including three during a 5-0 Lindsey Wilson run that closed the frame. The Warriors led 22-20 before a successful dump over by Gonçalves started the rally. Then, the three miscues and a Wyrzykowska service ace completed the comeback.

The second set tilted back-and-forth as neither side held a lead larger than two points early. Back-to-back aces by Hampton gave Lindsey Wilson a 17-15 edge and forced a Warriors' timeout. Out of the break, Rochester Christian outscored the Blue Raiders 10-3 to pull away and take the set.

Lindsey Wilson hit a match-high 0.385 in the third frame, paced by Wyrzykowska's nine kills. The Blue Raiders led 4-3 and proceeded on a five-point scoring run with two aces by Fernandez Garcia to create some separation. The advantage for Lindsey Wilson grew to 17-10 but drastically decreased when Rochester Christian worked in a 7-1 run to cut the deficit to 18-17. Seven of the last nine points, however, came from the Blue Raiders, culminating in a combo block by Marija Raonic and Sacca.

An 8-1 Lindsey Wilson surge made the difference in the fourth frame. The Warriors stood in front 15-14 before consecutive kills by Wyrzykowska ignited the stretch. Rochester Chrisitan tried to stick around only for Brooke Robinson to seal the deal with her second kill of the match.

Match Two: (RV) Lindsey Wilson 3, (RV) Texas Wesleyan 1

In a battle between two team receiving votes in the national coaches' poll, the Blue Raiders grinded out a hard-fought victory for their first true road win of the season.

Wyrzykowska bested her performance from the morning with a balanced double-double of 16 kills and a career-high 26 digs, while Fernandez Garcia produced an outstanding effort of her own by contributing 16 kills and 14 digs.

Early in the first set, on a pass to Fernandez Garcia, Gonçalves became the seventh setter in program history to reach 2,000 career assists. Her fifth assist of the match came as part of a 5-0 Lindsey Wilson sequence to put the Blue Raiders ahead 17-12. Texas Wesleyan pushed back to force a Lindsey Wilson timeout down 23-19, but a kill by Raonic and service ace from Hannah Garcia stopped the Rams in their tracks.

The two sides jousted through the second frame and traded momentum down to the wire. Tied at 23-23, Fernandez Garcia struck off an assist from Gonçalves. Then, a hitting error by Texas Wesleyan gave Lindsey Wilson the decisive two-point edge.

Action in the third set played out nearly identical to that in the second set. The Blue Raiders snuck in front 20-18 behind back-to-back kills by Wyrzykowska and a third from Raonic. The Rams utilized a timeout to regroup and rattled off seven of the last eight points to comeback and extend the match for one more set.

In the fourth, a Rams' service error triggered a five-point Blue Raider swing to put the visitors ahead 12-8. A four-point run soon after only increased Lindsey Wilson's lead to 17-11. Even still, Texas Wesleyan fought back to trim the score to 22-20. Strikes from Fernandez Garcia and Sofija Pjevic bumped the advantage back to four points, and the blocking tandem of Pjevic and Raonic ended the weekend for Lindsey Wilson.

The Blue Raiders hit the road, again, on September 5-6 to Grand Rapids, Michigan for the Aquinas/Cornerstone Invitational.
