Match One: Lindsey Wilson 3, Mississippi Valley State 1
Freshman
Brooke Robinson's season-high 10 kills headlined Lindsey Wilson's first win of the day.
Petra Fernandez Garcia and Sacca each contributed 10 kills of their own to help lead a balanced Blue Raider offense.
The Devilettes scored the first point of the opening set but fell behind a 6-1 Lindsey Wilson run full of five total errors and kill by Garcia. A pair of hits from Robinson made up half of a four-point soon after to grow the Blue Raiders' lead to 11-5. Mississippi Valley State took advantage of consecutive Lindsey Wilson miscues to pull within three points, down 16-13, but lost ground when the Blue Raiders broke off an 8-1 rally that included three service aces from Robinson. Gonçalves clinched the set on a rare setter's kill.
In the second, Mississippi Valley State led 5-4 before back-to-back kills by Gonçalves, plus two more from Wyrzykowska and Sacca began a 6-0 run. Despite a timeout by the Devilettes, the Blue Raiders kept their foot on the gas and ultimately won the frame 25-15. Four of Lindsey Wilson's last five points came off of Mississippi Valley State errors.
A back-and-forth third set eventually went to the Devilettes by the minimum margin. Then, the following set, the Blue Raiders left little doubt thanks to a quick 3-0 lead. Robinson and Sacca combined for seven of Lindsey Wilson's 12 kills in the fourth as the victors led by as many as 10 points en route to the win.
Match Two: Lindsey Wilson 3, Fisk (Tenn.) 0
Wyrzykowska's seventh double-double of the season – 11 kills and 10 digs – was key for Lindsey Wilson in its fifth consecutive sweep of the Bulldogs all-time.
The Blue Raiders started out of the gate strongly with a 6-1 lead.
Natalie Wandrie, Gonçalves, and Sacca all notched kills over that time frame. Fisk worked back midway through to cut the Lindsey Wilson lead to 14-12, then 16-15. The Blue Raiders maintained their composure, nonetheless, and never let the Bulldogs tie or take the lead. A decisive 6-2 stretch at the end of the set, capped by blocks from Garcia, Gonçalves, and Sacca, won the frame 25-19.
Fisk played more competitively in the middle set, going ahead 15-10. A Gonçalves kill and subsequent ace by Garcia turned the tables, however, and opened up a 7-1 run. The two sides traded punches the rest of the way. Garcia's third kill of the set made the score 24-22, then after a Blue Raider hitting error, Sacca closed on a successful hit of her own.
Lindsey Wilson inched in front 8-7 early in the third with three kills from Wyrzykowska, and one a piece from Wandrie and
Sofija Pjevic. An 8-2 run to follow for the Blue Raiders gave them the necessary separation to coast to the end. Consecutive blocks from Gonçalves, Sacca, and Pjevic shut the door on the Bulldogs for good.
Lindsey Wilson returns home to Biggers Sports Center at 6 p.m. CT on Thursday, September 18 to host Georgetown (Ky.) in the Mid-South Conference opener.
