Strong Second Half Propels No. 10 Football Past Reinhardt

WALESKA, Ga. – The No. 10-ranked Lindsey Wilson football team outscored Reinhardt (Ga.) 21-3 in the second half for a 35-27 victory Saturday at Ken White Field.

The Blue Raiders (4-0) trailed 24-14 at halftime before scoring 21 straight points in the second half. This marked the first time since November 23, 2019, that Lindsey Wilson has come back from a double-digit deficit in the second half.

Lindsey Wilson totaled 399 yards of offense compared to Reinhardt's (1-2) 436. The Eagles held the edge in rushing yards, 265-178, while the Blue Raiders had a 221-171 edge in passing yards. Defensively, the Blue Raiders forced a pair of turnovers and recorded five sacks. The five sacks are the most since September 7, 2024 when they recorded nine sacks at Point (Ga.).

Tate Rice completed 18 of his 29 passes for 221 yards while throwing a pair of touchdowns. For a second straight week, Davontaye Saunders rushed for over 150 yards. Saunders ran for 156 yards on 22 carries with a touchdown. Stevin Mack had six carries for 36 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Khia Sherrard caught seven passes for 98 yards and a touchdown and Taborie Reed added a touchdown reception.

Jamarques Frank led the Lindsey Wilson defense with a game-high 13 tackles, while Cameron Rankins also recorded double-digit tackles with 10. Rankins also had an interception and 0.5 sacks. Darius Moore had five tackles with three tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. Howie Gant also recorded an interception.

Following a Reinhardt punt on its first possession, the Blue Raiders struck first. Lindsey Wilson put together a 10-play, 81-yard drive that lasted 6:18 and was capped off by a one-yard run by Stevin Mack to lead 7-0. The Eagles responded by capping off a seven-play drive with a 46-yard touchdown pass to tie the game 7-7 with 3:32 left in the first quarter.

After a Blue Raider three-and-out, Reinhardt went 81 yards in six plays to take a 14-7 lead with just five seconds left in the first. On the next Blue Raider drive, the Eagles forced a fumble on a sack and took over at the Lindsey Wilson 19. Reinhardt capitalized on the field position with a three-yard rushing touchdown from Tyler Jackson to increase its lead to 21-7 with 11:19 remaining in the half.

On the ensuing kickoff, Byron Kirkland-Lundy returned the ball 79 yards to the Eagles' 18 with a Reinhardt facemask penalty putting the ball on the nine-yard line. Rice connected with Sherrard on the first play of the drive to cut the deficit to 21-14.

Rankins intercepted Jackson's pass on the next drive, returning it seven yards to the Lindsey Wilson 42. The Blue Raiders were unable to capitalize on the interception, going three-and-out and punting to the Eagles. Reinhardt went on a 13-play, 89-yard drive, connecting on a 27-yard field goal to lead 24-14 with 59 seconds left in the half.

Lindsey Wilson started the second half with the ball and went 80 yards in 17 plays that lasted 7:06. Mack put the finishing touches on the drive with his second one-yard touchdown making it 24-21. The 17 plays and the 7:06 time of possession marks the longest scoring drive of the season for the Blue Raiders.

Gant intercepted the Jackson pass at the Blue Raiders'  six-yard line on the next drive. The two teams then traded punts on the next two drives. Rice connected with Reed for a 17-yard touchdown, giving the Blue Raiders their first lead since the first quarter with 35 seconds left in the third.

The Eagles returned the kick 60 yards to the Lindsey Wilson 40. Reinhardt had a 3rd and 2 at the  Lindsey 32 before back-to-back sacks gave the Blue Raiders the ball at their own 45. Lindsey Wilson was in Reinhardt territory before a fumble gave the Eagles the ball on their own 25.

The Lindsey Wilson defense responded, forcing Reinhardt to punt the ball back to the Blue Raiders with 7:08 to play. Saunders ran for a 63-yard touchdown, increasing the Lindsey Wilson lead to 35-24 with 5:26 remaining.

Reinhardt needed just one play to get into Blue Raider territory on its next drive. The Eagles had a first and goal at the five-yard line. The Lindsey Wilson defense stood strong and held Reinhardt to a field goal, making it 35-27 with 3:12 to play.

Lindsey Wilson punted the ball back to Reinhardt with 1:29 left and the Eagles starting at their own 19. Rankins and Letavion Everly sacked Jackson on the first play of the drive. Following an eight-yard completion, Moore recorded a sack on third down, making it 4th and 16 with 51 seconds left. The Blue Raiders got the fourth-down stop to secure the 35-27 comeback victory.

The Blue Raiders head into a bye next week and return to action on Oct. 4 to open Mid-South Conference play at No. 6 Georgetown (Ky.) at 1:30 p.m. CT at Toyota Stadium.
