Volleyball Stuns No. 10 Missouri Baptist in St. Louis

St. LOUIS, Mo. – The Lindsey Wilson volleyball team brushed away a slow start to rattle off three-straight set wins and upset No. 10 Missouri Baptist in four on Saturday.

It is the Blue Raiders first win over a ranked opponent since defeating 10th-ranked Life (Ga.) on November 13, 2021, and the program's first road win over a top-10 opponent in nine years.

Petra Fernandez Garcia finished the day with 14 kills – after recording only one in the first set – and 12 digs, while Ola Wyrzykowska produced a well-rounded stat line for 14 kills, 10 digs, three blocks, and two aces.

Luiza Gonçalves passed out 43 assists – her most in a match this season since September 9 – and added six digs, four blocks, and three aces. Momo Hampton and Ana Clara Beltran Sacca led Lindsey Wilson's defense with 15 digs and six blocks, respectively.

"That was a heck of a match," expressed head coach Josh Kreiner. "We've been stacking good days in practice, and we stacked a good day, today! We bought into the game plan and only cared about earning a '3' next to our name."

Missouri Baptist started the first set with five consecutive points and never let up from there. The Spartans led by as many as 10 points and outhit the visitors 0.333 to 0.174. Marija Raonic paced the Blue Raiders' offense in the opening set with four kills.

Four errors by the Spartans to open the second set pushed Lindsey Wilson out to a 4-1 lead. Missouri Baptist recovered, however, to go ahead 6-5. A Spartan service error, followed by an ace from Layla HuYoung triggered a 6-1 run for the Blue Raiders. During the run, Fernandez Garcia struck for three kills in four points. Missouri Baptist stayed on Lindsey Wilson's heels and pulled to within one, down 24-23. Receiving the Spartans' serve, Gonçalves found Wyrzykowska who tipped the ball to a scrambling defense on the other side of the net, tying the match at 1-1.

Between the third and fourth sets, Lindsey Wilson bested the Spartans 0.167 to 0.118 on the attack, including a match-high 0.222 in the third.

Gonçalves and Sacca combined for the block to start the third frame. Kills by Fernandez Garcia and Wyrzykowska mixed in with two Missouri Baptist errors helped Lindsey Wilson out to a 5-1 advantage. The hosts, again, answered back to take a 6-5 lead. Trailing 14-12, back-to-back spikes off the hands of Natalie Wandrie and Wyrzykowska tied the score, then a combo block by Gonçalves and Sacca before a Rylee Springer service ace gave Lindsey Wilson the two-point lead. Missouri Baptist came out of its own timeout and eventually knotted the score at 22-22, but Fernandez Garcia and Wyrzykowska shut down the Spartans with matching kills to take the set.

In the fourth, the home side scored first but fell behind just as quickly off block assists from Wyrzykowska and Sacca, and an ace by Gonçalves. Momentum shifted back to the Spartans, and they raced in front, 16-13. Missouri Baptist maintained the pressure to boost its cushion to 22-18. As things started leaning toward a fifth set, a Spartan service error set in motion a huge 5-1 Blue Raider rally. Tied at 23-23, Lindsey Wilson went on to survive three Spartan set-points before earning its first match-point at 27-26. Missouri Baptist managed to stay alive at first, only to commit another service miscue. With Springer serving, the Spartans just kept the ball off the floor on the reception but left the door wide open for Sacca to punch it home for the win.

Lindsey Wilson continues its four-match road trip at 7 p.m. CT on Tuesday, September 30 when the Blue Raiders travel to Oakland City (Ind.).
