No.24 Blue Raiders Overpower No.4 Tigers 84-69

COLUMBIA, Ky.- For the first time since February 2, 2017 the No.24-ranked Blue Raiders defeated the No.4 Tigers of Campbellsville (Ky.) 84-69 in Biggers Sports Center Thursday night. 

All five Blue Raider starters finished in double-figures with Amelia Hodges leading the way with 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting from three and 7-of-12 from the field. Jarie Thomas finished with 16 points, knocking down 2-of-3 from behind the arc and 7-of-10 from the field. Saniyah Shelton, Taylor Guess, and Meadow Tisdale round out the offensive brigade with 13, 11, and 10 points, respectively. 

Lindsey Wilson opened all scores at 8:36 with Tisdale converting on an and-one assisted by Guess to give LWU an early 3-0 advantage. Campbellsville answered back with a 4-0 run to lead 4-3 with 7:15 on the clock. Thomas connected on an easy layup on an assist from Tisdale at 7:05 to take back a 5-4 edge. The Tigers went on a 7-0 run from 6:46 to 4:06 grabbing an 11-5 advantage. The Blue Raiders answered back with a 6-0 run of their own, with Emily Cox connecting on four free throws and Fleming knocking down two free throws to even the game at 11-11 with 1:44 remaining in the first quarter. Campbellsville's Hallie Allen knocked down a jumper with 0:55 on the clock, but was answered by a Cox three for a LWU 14-13 lead with 0:31 to play. Campbellsville grabbed an offensive rebound, finding Dea Bradley at the top of the key with 0:01 left in the quarter for a deep two, edging the Tigers ahead 15-14 at the end of the first ten minutes. 

The Blue Raiders opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run that lasted until 8:31 with Shelton knocking down two straight jumpers, followed by a Guess mid-range pull-up to lead 20-15. Campbellsville's Whitney Hay went coast-to-coast to cut the LWU lead to 20-17 with 7:46 remaining in the first half. Shelton found Hodges on the wing at 7:26 growing the lead back to 23-17. Allen knocked down two triples for the Tigers to tie the game at 23-23 but was answered with a three from Hodges at 4:53 giving LWU back a 26-23 advantage. At 4:12 and 3:00, Thomas knocked down back-to-back threes growing the lead to 32-23. From 3:00 to 1:51, Campbellsville went on a 5-0 run, cutting the lead down to 32-28. Lindsey Wilson closed the quarter on a 7-2 run, taking a 39-30 sway into the halftime lockerroom. 

Tisdale opened the second half scoring at 9:39 on a tough bucket underneath the rim. Hodges and Tisdale knocked down consecutive buckets at 8:43 and 8:05 to grow the Blue Raider lead to 45-32. With 6:54 on the clock, Shelton pulled up for a mid-range on the left side knocking it down, creating the and-one, increasing the lead to 48-34. Hay knocked down two jumpers, exchanging baskets with Thomas and Guess till 5:21 for a 52-38 Blue Raider advantage. With 5:08 on the clock, Hodges grabbed a defensive board, hitting Guess in the open court who converted on an and-one at 5:03, growing the lead to 55-38. Tisdale got to the rim at 3:12 to increase the lead to 57-41. From 2:44 to 1:04, Campbellsville went on a 9-2 run with Hay contributing six points, and Tyra Flowers adding three points, cutting the Blue Raider lead to 59-50. After a jumper from Thomas on an assist from Hodgess, Guess stole the ball with 0:09 seconds on the clock prompting a timeout from Coach John Wethington and with 0:02 left in the third quarter, Hodges pulled up from the volleyball line, banking in a three and growing the LWU lead to 64-50 headed into the final ten minutes. 

Thomas knocked down a jumper at 9:31, followed by a three pointer at 8:43 from Hodges to increase the Lindsey Wilson lead to 69-50. At 6:06 Hay converted on a layup to decrease the lead back to 69-53 but was answered by Hodges with a three at 5:39 on an assist from Guess to grow the lead back to 72-53. From 4:52 to 1:26 Campbellsville went on a 11-6 run cutting the Blue Raider lead to 78-64. With 1:25 remaining in the game, Shelton converted on a layup and then the next possession found herself at the line with 0:59 seconds on the clock, knocking down two free throws, growing the lead to 82-64. Fleming got herself to the rim with 0:32 left on the clock growing the Blue Raider advantage to 84-67. Lindsey Wilson held the Tigers to just two more points to defeat Campbellsville 84-69. 

Women's hoops will be back in action on Saturday at 1 P.M. CT to take on the (RV) Phoenix of Cumberland (Tenn.) at Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena.
