No. 8 Women's Soccer Advances to MSC Semifinals With 4-1 Win Over Georgetown

COLUMBIA, Ky. — The No. 8 Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team defeated Georgetown (Ky.) 4-1 in the Mid-South Conference quarterfinals on Wednesday night at Walter S. Reuling Stadium. With the victory, the Blue Raiders will travel to Cumberlands (Ky.) to face off in the MSC semifinals.

Lindsey Wilson heavily dominated the first half, but the scoreboard didn't reflect the control as they failed to convert numerous early chances. Tigers goalkeeper Olivia York saved a penalty kick by the Blue Raiders' Ashiat Naluggwa in the eighth minute. Including that penalty, Lindsey Wilson had 11 shots in the first 41 minutes of the match, coming up empty on all attempts.

Georgetown (6-8-3) struck first on its only shot of the opening period. In the 43rd minute, Faith Burnside earned an assist on a throw-in to Laura Beumala, who drilled a long-distance goal from just inside the attacking third to put the Tigers up 1-0 late in the half.

Less than minute later, Ona Monserrat Baca found the cure for Lindsey Wilson's offensive woes. Assisted by Norka Fergusson, Monserrat Baca evened the contest at 1-1, a score that was taken into halftime.

Coming out of the break, Monserrat Baca provided the Blue Raiders with the go-ahead goal in the 55th minute. Julia Marcolongo rifled a shot off the post, and Monserrat Baca beat the defense to rebound, putting it back to claim a 2-1 lead.

A corner kick by Camila Vieira in the 69th minute set up Lindsey's Wilson third goal. Vieira sent the ball into the box, where Monserrat Baca redirected it to a waiting Alexandra Giusti, who slipped the shot past the keeper to extend the lead to 3-1.

The final goal came courtesy of Eva Cova in the 76th minute. Cova gathered the ball at midfield and sparked a breakaway, shaking loose from the defense and finding the back of the net to cap the scoring.

The Blue Raiders (11-3-1) outshot the Tigers 26-2 in the match, limiting the Tigers to just one shot each half and zero shots on-goal in the closing period. Lindsey Wilson moves to 45-1-3 all-time against Georgetown.

Up next for Lindsey Wilson is a trip to face No. 4 Cumberlands in the MSC semifinals at 3 p.m. CT on Wednesday, Nov. 4, with a spot in the conference championship game on the line.
