No. 13 Women’s Basketball Falls to No. 21 Patriots 63-54 in Regular Season Finale

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky.- The No. 13-ranked Blue Raider women's basketball team fell 63-54 to the No. 21 Patriots of the Cumberlands (Ky.) on Saturday afternoon at the O. Wayne Rollins Center. 

Jarie Thomas led the Blue Raider offense with 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting and 2-of-3 from behind the arc. Saniyah Shelton rounded out the double-figure scoring with 11 points and nine rebounds. 

Amelia Hodges opened the scoring for Lindsey Wilson knocking down a jumper at 8:01 to end a 4-0 Patriot run to start the game for a 4-2 score. Thomas tied the game at 4-4 at 5:43 on a tough jumper from the corner. Cumberlands went on a 9-5 run to close the first quarter to leave the Blue Raiders trailing 13-9. 

Thomas connected on a jumper at 8:54 on an assist from Claire Fleming to cut the deficit to 18-11. At 3:50 Shelton knocked down two free throws to cut the Patriot lead to single digits at 16-24. Cumberlands closed the half on an 11-3 run to lead Lindsey Wilson 35-19 going into halftime. 

Hodges found the bottom of the net at 8:54 to cut the deficit to 35-21 to open the third quarter. At 3:14 Cumberlands pushed the lead back to 44-27, but Emily Cox answered with a three on an assist by Fleming to cut the lead back down to 44-30. Fleming knocked down two free throws with 0:00 on the clock to end a 7-0 Patriot run, cutting the Blue Raider deficit to 51-32 headed into the final ten minutes of action. 

Shelton knocked down a free throw at 9:01 that sparked a 13-2 run cutting the Patriot lead down to 53-45 with 4:10 remaining in regulation. With 3:38 on the clock, Thomas knocked down a triple on an assist from Shelton followed by a three from Hodges on a dime from Shelton to cut the lead to 55-51 with 2:54 to play. Fleming knocked down a three at 1:27 on an assist from Hodges to cut the lead to 54-57. Cumberlands closed the game on a 6-0 run knocking down all six free throw attempts to defeat LWU 63-54. 

Women's Hoops will be back in action on Feb. 27, in the quarterfinals of the Mid-South Conference Tournament in Bowling Green, Kentucky at Bowling Green high school. The tournament bracket will be announced later this week by league officials.
