ELKHART, Ind. - Lindsey Wilson men's swimming surged two spots to finish ninth at the NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championships on Saturday.
The Blue Raiders received a huge boost from their efforts in the 1,650 freestyle, as three swimmers landed inside the top eight for the second consecutive season.
Sergio Ybarra led the trio in second place, showcasing a standout effort to close in on a race's top finisher over the final laps. The sophomore shaved 8.64 seconds off his season-best time -- 15:31.77 -- and earns his second All-American award in the event.
Ethan Butler recorded a personal best time of 15:52.63 to earn fifth place. He becomes the second swimmer in program history to earn three All-American honors in the mile, joining
Fabio Martin Rojo who did it four times.
Lastly,
Oliver Greaves had to wait several hours before he knew if he had made the All-American podium. After swimming one of the slower heats during the morning session and clocking a new fastest time of 16:02.94, -- a full 10.59 seconds off his previous best -- Greaves stood by and cheered on Ybarra and Butler in the evening heat. When the water finally settled, the freshman soon realized his efforts in the morning catapulted him to eighth place and his first career All-American honor.
Three events later,
Clinton Eales checked in a new school record time of 2:01.19 to win the "B" final of the 200 breaststroke. He set the program record for the 100 breaststroke on Friday.
The Blue Raiders' final swim of the week came from
Max van Schagen,
Jose Rivas, Eales, and
Lorenz Hof in the 400 freestyle relay. With the ninth-quickest time of 3:04.56, the boys ended on a high note with a new season-best for the event.
Lindsey Wilson tallied 165 total team points, the second-most among Mid-South Conference schools.
