JACKSON, Tenn. – No. 16 Lindsey Wilson women's soccer started the season with a 2-1 victory over fourth-ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan this afternoon in Jackson, Tennessee. It marks the first time in program history that LWU has beaten the Eagles.
A corner opportunity by the Blue Raiders in the 11th minute was sent into the box, Alexandria Giusti played it with her left foot and sent it past the keeper for a 1-0 Lindsey Wilson lead.
A goal by OKWU's Ana Chaves in the 34th minute evened the game at 1-1, where it would stay deadlocked into the half.
In the 53rd minute, on the attack Lindsey Wilson's
Ashiat Naluggwa was fouled, resulting in her being awarded a penalty kick. Naluggwa slow approached the shot and scored, giving the Blue Raiders a 2-1 edge.
Oklahoma Wesleyan attempted to answer back with a goal of their own in the 60th minute, but Lindsey Wilson goalkeeper
Demi Serman denied the attempt. Serman stood tall on two more occasions down the stretch, first in the 68th minute and then again in the 72nd minute.
The Blue Raiders prevented consistent touches or possessions for the Eagles in the waning minutes of the game, resulting in a season-opening victory for Lindsey Wilson.
LWU finished the game with four shots and three corner kicks. Serman collected four saves and earned her eighth career win in net.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action on Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT with a trip to No. 12 Grace (Ind.).
