BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The (RV) Blue Raider volleyball team added two tallies to the win column on Saturday at the Vette City Classic, defeating Keiser (Fla.) and Indiana East.
Match One: (RV) Lindsey Wilson 3, Keiser (Fla.) 1
Tied at 6-6 in the opening set, three Seahawk attack errors and a kill from
Natalie Wandrie fueled a 4-1 Blue Raider run, giving Lindsey Wilson a 10-7 advantage. The Blue Raiders maintained their lead deep into the set, but
Keiser battled back to even the score at 22-22. Two blocks apiece from
Sofija Pjevic and
Tully Bew pushed Lindsey Wilson to set point before a Seahawks hitting error sealed the 25-23 victory.
Keiser came out strong in the second set, jumping to a 7-2 lead and extending its advantage to 14-8. Consecutive kills from Wandrie and
Gabi Zuquelo sparked a seven-point Blue Raider run that brought Lindsey Wilson back into the set. From there, the Blue Raiders did just enough to keep the Seahawks at bay. With Lindsey Wilson leading 23-22, Zuquelo delivered back-to-back kills to close out the set and give the Blue Raiders a commanding two-set lead.
Lindsey Wilson held a 14-11 lead in the third set, but the Seahawks battled back to claim the frame 25-20 and extend the match to a fourth set.
A five-point Blue Raider run, highlighted by an ace from
Addison Janes, turned a one-point advantage into an 11-5 lead early in the fourth. Lindsey Wilson's advantage grew to as many as eight points at 18-10, with kills from Zuquelo and Wandrie helping fuel the run. Although the Seahawks continued to fight late, the Blue Raiders' .400 attack percentage in the fourth set proved too much for Keiser to overcome.
Bew put down a match-high 16 kills, hitting .361, and added six blocks.
Janes passed out 21 assists, and
Layla HuYoung led three Blue Raiders with double-digit digs with 16.
Match Two: (RV) Lindsey Wilson 3, Indiana East 0
The Blue Raiders closed the weekend with a sweep of Indiana East, turning in a season-best .258 hitting percentage in the 3-0 victory. Lindsey Wilson also held the Red Wolves to a .074 hitting percentage while recording nine blocks.
Lindsey Wilson used separate runs of 7-1 and 7-2 to pull away in the opening set. Leading 14-8, a kill by Bew sparked the latter run, which included four Indiana East hitting errors. The Blue Raiders built a lead of as many as 11 points before taking the first set, 25-14.
In the middle frame, a
Dreu Patterson kill sparked a four-point run that pushed Lindsey Wilson ahead 10-4. The Blue Raiders maintained a strong offensive rhythm, hitting .300 in the set while building a 20-11 advantage. Indiana East battled back to cut the deficit to 20-17, but Lindsey Wilson responded by winning five of the next six points to secure a 25-18 victory.
The Red Wolves opened the third set with their strongest start of the match, taking a 9-6 lead. Sandrone Tais and
Duda Becho quickly shifted the momentum, combining for three kills and a block over the next four points to put the Blue Raiders in front, 10-9. Lindsey Wilson never relinquished the lead from there, closing the match with a 6-0 run. Janes delivered two aces during the final stretch, while Sandrone Tais added the match-clinching kill to complete the sweep.
Sandrone Tais closed with a team-high 11 kills, while Bew added eight.
Becho got up at the net for six blocks, and Patterson chipped in four.
Lindsey Wilson travels next to Omaha, Nebraska, Sept. 4-5, for the College of Saint Mary/MH Hospitality Labor Day Classic.
