BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team defeated West Virginia Tech 1-0 Saturday at YMCA Paul Cline Memorial Youth Sports Complex.
It was early pressure from the Blue Raiders on offense,
Ona Monserrat Baca squared up a shot in the third minute of the game, forcing a stop by the Golden Bears' keeper. West Virginia Tech responded with a shot of their own in the seventh minute, Shiloh Goodwin fired away, but Lindsey Wilson goalkeeper
Demi Serman saved it.
Following a foul by the Golden Bears, a free kick was awarded to the Blue Raiders in the 16th minute where
Alexandra Giusti found Monserrat Baca for the game's only goal, giving Lindsey Wilson the 1-0 advantage.
In the 33rd minute
Norka Fergusson sent a header into the box looking to extend the Blue Raiders lead, but West Virginia Tech was able to corral it for a save. Lindsey Wilson took a 1-0 lead into the half.
The Blue Raiders (5-1-1) took five shots after the break.
Ashiat Naluggwa rocketed an attempt off the crossbar in the 73rd minute, she followed it up with another shot in the 77th minute, those were Lindsey Wilson's best chances to break open the lead in the second half.
West Virginia Tech (4-4-1) spent a majority of the match looking for the equalizer, but failed to penetrate the Blue Raiders' defense. The Golden Bears came close to evening it up in the 85th minute, Rocío Gutiérrez gathered a loose ball and took the potential game-tying shot, but sailed it left of target.
Lindsey Wilson's second shutout of the season moves them to 10-0-0 all-time against West Virginia Tech.
Up next for the Blue Raiders is a road matchup against (RV) Tennessee Southern at 4 p.m. CT on Tuesday, Sept. 22.
