Box Score FRANKFORT, Ky. -- The Lindsey Wilson College women's basketball team fell 57-48 tonight to top-seeded Georgetown College in the semfinals of the 2005 Mid-South Conference Women's Basketball Tournament at the Frankfort Civic Center.
Lindsey Wilson College, who was not ranked in the next-to-last poll, must now wait and see if they can move into the final poll that comes out on Tuesday for a chance at an at-large bid into the NAIA National Tournament in Jackson, Tennessee.
"I think we are one of the top 32 teams in the NAIA," Lindsey Wilson College women's basketball coach
John B. Wethington said. "But it's out of our hands now. We'll just have to see what the rating says on Tuesday."
Georgetown used a 12-3 run in the final 4:09 of the first half to build a 28-20 halftime lead.
Georgetown junior forward Meghan Hillman sparked the run with a pair of three-point baskets. Hillman finished the game with 14 points. Hillman's three-pointers were two of seven the Lady Tigers (25-5) hit on the night. Georgetown enjoyed a 21-3 advantage from behind the arc.
"I thought we allowed the game to get away from us towards the end of the first half," Wethington said. "We just got tired and made too many turnovers as the half went on. I beleive those three or four minutes was the turning point of the game."
The Lady Tigers extended their lead to 14 points on two different occasions early in the second half, their largest lead of the game.
Lindsey Wilson (21-11) managed to cut the Georgetown lead to seven (52-45) with 3:05 left following Blue Raider senior forward
Tiffany Jones' three-point play. Jones ended with a game-high 17 points.
"We had a chance," Wethington said. "You just have to tip your hat to Georgetown. Ther're winners and they know how to finish a game."
Georgetown responded with four unanswered points to push the lead back to 11 with 1:11 left in the game as senior guard Neeley Thomas three-pointer gave the Lady Tigers the double digit lead. Thomas finished with 10 points.
Lindsey Wilson junior
Rebecca Husband made a basket as time expired to end the game at 57-48.
The Blue Raiders out-rebounded Georgetown and limited the Lady Tigers to 35.1 percent (20 of 57) shooting from the field, but was unable to overcome 21 turnovers. Lindsey Wilson shot 40.4 percent (19 of 47) from the field.
Georgetown senior guard Candas Smith's 16 points and junior guard Katie Columbus' 13 points finished out the Lady Tiger quartet in double figures.
Lindsey Wilson freshman center Tarren Duncan joined Jones in double figures with 12 points.
"I'm proud of our effort over the last couple of days," Wethington said. "I think our younger kids gained valuable experience for the future and our seniors really stepped up during the tournament and gave us a lot of leadership."
Georgetown returns to action at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday as they take on third-seeded Cumberland College in the tournament championship game.
