Women's Soccer Opens Season with 1-1 Tie Against Madonna University

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Wilson College freshman Daniela Schwarz scored her first career goal to help lead the Blue Raiders to a 1-1 tie against Madonna (Mich.) University on Saturday night at Lindsey Wilson Park.

Lindsey Wilson (0-0-1) fell behind early as Madonna junior forward Kelly Japowicz scored the game's first goal at the 13:47 mark. Japowicz's goal caromed through the arms of Lindsey Wilson sophomore goalkeeper Krystal Jackson to give the Crusaders the 1-0 lead.

Despite out-shooting Madonna 11-2 in the opening half, Lindsey Wilson, who was playing without a pair of starters including first-team All-American Jill Lirbank-Almbaek, trailed 1-0 at the break.

In the second half, Lindsey Wilson continued to attack the Madonna defense and freshman goalkeeper Brittany Cervi. Cervi ended the night with 14 saves.

The Blue Raiders sent 12 shots to the goal in the second half. Schwarz's shot, off a blocked shot by a Madonna defender, at the 76:31 mark found the net to tie the game at 1-1.

Lindsey Wilson and Madonna (0-0-2) played the final 13:29 of regulation and a pair of 10-minute overtime periods scoreless for the 1-1 tie.

Lindsey Wilson out-shot the Crusaders 29-2, including 15-1 in shots on goal.

The Blue Raiders return to action at 7 p.m. CT on Wednesday, August 31, as they host Virginia Intermont College at Lindsey Wilson Park.
