Defense, Russell Lifts Men's Basketball to 63-47 Win Over No. 10- Ranked Campbellsville

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- The Lindsey Wilson College men's basketball team limited No. 10-ranked Campbellsville (Ky.) University to a season-low 47 points in upsetting the home-standing Tigers 63-47 on Thursday night at Powell Athletic Center.

Lindsey Wilson held the Tigers, who normally shoots nearly 47 percent from the field, to 36 percent (18-of-50) for the game.
"Our defense tonight was the best it has been all year," Lindsey Wilson men's basketball coach Paul Peck said. "Campbellsville is a terrific offensive club and I thought we did a great job of challenging almost every shot tonight. We just didn't give up anything easy tonight."

The Blue Raider defense just missed the program record for points allowed in a game, allowing only 47 points. The program record of 44 points allowed was set on a pair of occasions, March 4, 2003 against Brescia (Ky.) University and earlier this season against St. Vincent (Pa.) College in the Lou Cunningham Classic hosted at Campbellsville.

Lindsey Wilson limited senior Zach Ingles, the conference's leading scorer at 18.5 points per game, to a team-high 13 points on five of 16 shooting.

"He (Ingles) can score from anywhere on the court," Peck said. "I thought we did a great job making him work for every shot."

Lindsey Wilson held Ingles' teammate, sophomore Zach Allender under his season average (16.7) as well. Allender ended the night with 10 points on five of 11 shooting.

"Allender is maybe the best player in this league," Peck said. "To limit him to 10 points is one to the reasons we were successful tonight."

The Lindsey Wilson defense shut down a Campbellsville outside game that boasts a conference-best 9.2 three-pointers made per game. Campbellsville made just four of 15 tonight.

"We struggled over the last several games," Peck said. "But we know who we are and what we do well. We play defense and we want to make it as difficult as we can for the opposing team to put the ball in the basket. It's what we do well most nights and it helped us win tonight."

The win tonight breaks the Blue Raiders' modest two-game losing streak, and helps Lindsey Wilson avoid what would have been the only three-game losing streak under Peck.

Ingles opening three-pointer gave the Tigers (17-2, 1-1 in the Mid-South Conference) their largest lead of the game in the opening seconds of the game.

The Blue Raiders, who sit just outside the NAIA Top-25 at No. 26, led by as many as 16 points in the opening half thanks to the tenacious defense and 55.6 percent (15-of-27) shooting in the first half. Lindsey Wilson led 34-21 at the half. The Blue Raiders shot 48.9 percent (23-of-47) for the game.

Lindsey Wilson, who out-rebounded the Tigers 30-27 for the game, limited Campbellsville to just seven rebounds in the first 20 minutes.

The Blue Raiders (15-5, 1-1 in conference play) would extend their lead to as many as 19 points in the second half en route to the 63-47 win.

Lindsey Wilson senior forward Stephen Russell recorded his fourth double-double of the season with game-highs, 17 points and 10 rebounds. Russell made seven of his last eight shots in the game to finish the night after missing his first three attempts. Russell made three of six from beyond the three-point line. Entering the game, he had made just eight of his last 29 attempts.

Lindsey Wilson sophomore forward Lloyd Lewis contributed 14 points and eight rebounds, while senior guard Scott Cook added 11 points and six assists.

"We felt if we could somehow escape our opening two conference games (both have been on the road) with a split, we would be in pretty good shape," Peck said. "We did that. Now we have to start on Saturday protecting our home court,"
