Women's Basketball Loses Fourth Straight, Falls 84-59

Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. -- The Lindsey Wilson College women's basketball team traveled to the Lambuth (Tenn.) University Tip-Off Classic this weekend here in West Tennessee in search of their first win of the season.

Instead, they found more of the same.

The Blue Raiders committed a program-high 47 turnovers en route to an 84-59 loss to host Lambuth (1-0). The 47 turnovers broke the program's record of 43 turnovers, which was set Monday night in a 102-81 home loss to Berea (Ky.) College.

Lindsey Wilson (0-4) shot season-high 41.7 percent from the field and forced Lambuth into 31 turnovers. But the Blue Raiders' fate was sealed in the first half by committing 28 turnovers against the Eagles' full-court defense.

"We just are not handling the pressure real well right now," Lindsey Wilson coach John B. Wethington said after more than a 45-minute post-game team meeting. "We don't make good decisions. More than half of our turnovers tonight we unforced.

"But more important right now, we don't have anyone on this team who has stepped up and taken on a leadership role."

The Blue Raiders began the game with a handicap -- starting point guard Tiffany Reid was sidelined because of minor sinus surgery, so junior guard Krystal Jackson started in her place.

It didn't take long for the Blue Raiders to miss Reid's presence. Lambuth's defense led to a 19-0 run midway through the first half, which included nine Blue Raider turnovers and three missed field-goal attempts. LWC finally stopped the Eagle run at the 10:54 mark when senior forward Shola Aladejebi sank a free-throw to make the score 24-8.

But the Blue Raiders couldn't recover from the body blow as Lambuth increased its lead to as much as 21 points in the first half to take a 41-26 halftime lead. Lindsey Wilson never got the margin into single digits the rest of the game.

Field goal shooting was a case in point of the Blue Raiders' troubles: both teams hit 41 percent of their attempts, but because of LWC's 47 turnovers, they attempted 25 fewer shots in the game. The Eagles out-rebounded the Blue Raiders 44-32.

"We're just a very passive team right now," Wethington said. "And we need to find the right personnel who won't be so passive out there. And I will keep searching and trying combinations until I find them."

Lindsey Wilson was lead by junior center Terran Duncan's 12 points in 23 minutes of action.

"I was pleased with Terran's defensive effort tonight," Wethington said. "I challenged her tonight to play stronger defensively, and she stepped up and did a good job."

Jackson finished with nine points but turned the ball over 10 times in 26 minutes of action. Sophomore guard Mary Jenna Nixon and Aladejebi each had seven points.

The Eagles were paced by three players in double figures: junior forward Makeba Thomas' game-high 19 points, senior forward Jodi Gunter's 16 points and freshman forward Kristin Brison's 14 points.
