Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Lindsey Wilson College women's basketball coach John Wethington may want to have alumnae reunions at the rest of the Blue Raiders' home games.
With more than a dozen former players in attendance, Lindsey Wilson upset No. University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) 70-64.
The Blue Raiders (7-14, 1-0 Mid-South Conference) trailed 52-39 with 13:26 left in the game. But LWC then went on a 21-8 run over the next 11:05 to tie the game 60-60 with 2:21 left to play. LWC won the game at the free-throw line by hitting eight of 10 free-throw attempts down the stretch.
"Our players showed a lot of maturity today, and I think playing a tough non-conference schedule is starting to pay off for us," Wethington said. "They stuck to their game plan, and they never panicked. I'm just very proud of the way they played out there today."
Lindsey Wilson barely hung in the game during the first half, hitting just 32 percent of their shots from the floor to trail 35-25 at intermission.
Things didn't appear to be much more promising in the second half for the Blue Raiders when Cumberlands (17-3, 0-1) pulled out to a 52-39 lead with 13:26 to go in the game. But that's when the Lindsey Wilson defense started to reduce the Patriots' open looks to the basket. In the last 11 minutes of the game, Cumberlands' offense produced just four field goals.
Meanwhile, the Blue Raiders' offense kicked into high gear. Lindsey Wilson blistered the nets in the second half, hitting 16-of-26 shots (61.5 percent). Lindsey Wilson also out-rebounded the Patriots by a 18-14 margin in the second half.
Lindsey Wilson tied the game for the first time at 60-60 with 2:21 to go when junior guard
Kara Osterfeld hit a shot in the paint on an assist from junior point guard
Krystal Jackson. Osterfeld was fouled by Cumberlands' Amber Neace, and then gave the Blue Raiders their first lead since early in the first half by making the foul shot.
The rest of Lindsey Wilson's points came from the charity stripe -- with the exception of a field goal by junior center
Terran Duncan with five seconds remaining. Just as important, the Blue Raiders didn't commit a turnover in the game's final 2:11, and their offense worked the shot clock down into signal digits during almost every possession.
"I thought our girls did a very good job of keeping their composure inside the final two minutes," Wethington said. "They made Cumberlands come after us and did a very good job of taking care of the ball."
LWC was led by
Shola Aladejebi. The senior forward recorded a double-double with a team-high 14 points and 10 rebounds. She was 5-of-5 from the field and hit 4-of-6 free throws. Senior guard
Tiffany Reid scored 13 points, and Duncan had nine points.
Cumberlands was led by Kristen Roberson's game-high 15 points, Jennifer Nagy's 14 points and Lissi Fuller's 10 points.
