COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The Lindsey Wilson College men's and women's basketball teams split a doubleheader today with visiting University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) at Biggers Sports Center.
The Lindsey Wilson women remained tied atop the Mid-South Conference standings with a 67-65 win over the Lady Patriots in the opener, while Cumberlands snapped the Blue Raider men's 12-game home winning with a 73-56 rout in the nightcap.
In the first game, Lindsey Wilson shot 52.9 percent (27-of-51) from the field to hang on to the upset win over No. 20-ranked Cumberlands.
The Blue Raiders (17-9, 5-1 in the MSC) led by as many as 13 points early in the second half before the Lady Patriots used a 13-2 run to close the Lindsey Wilson lead to 46-44 with 14:55 remaining.
Lindsey Wilson -- who led all but 35 seconds of the game -- could not put the visitors away.
Lindsey Wilson senior center Terran Duncan's basket with 8:34 left gave the Blue Raiders a 54-49 lead. The five-point lead proved to be the largest down the stretch.
Cumberlands (18-7, 4-2) continued its comeback cutting the Blue Raider lead to a single point on four different occasions over the next six minutes.
Cumberlands senior guard Lissi Fuller's basket and subsequent free throw tied the game for just the second time at 60-60 with 2:39 left.
After a Lindsey Wilson turnover, Cumberlands senior center Crystal Taylor put the Lady Patriots in front for the first time at 62-60 with 1:44 left. Taylor finished with 10 points.
Nine seconds later Duncan cut the Cumberlands lead in half after making one of two free throws. The Edmonton, Ky., native, finished with 16 points.
Junior guard Ewa Bukowska gave the Blue Raiders the lead for good at the 1:09 mark with a driving lay-up to give Lindsey Wilson the 63-62 lead.
Following a Cumberlands turnover, senior guard Kera Gibson hit Lindsey Wilson's only three-pointer of the game to give the Blue Raiders the 66-62 lead with 24.7 seconds left. Cumberlands finished the game out-scoring the Blue Raiders 27-3 from the outside.
Fuller -- who finished with 16 points -- answered with three eight seconds later to cut the Lindsey Wilson advantage to back to one.
After a foul, LWC senior forward Kara Osterfeld netted one of two free throws to give the Blue Raiders a 67-65 lead with 12.3 seconds left.
Fuller missed a shot to tie in the paint and the Blue Raiders escaped with the 67-65 win.
Cumberlands shot just 32.3 percent (21-of-65) from the field, including 9-of-35 from three-point range.
Lindsey Wilson freshman forward and reigning NAIA National Player of the Week Viktoria Krell recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Senior guard Krystal Jackson added 10 points in the win.
Cumberlands sophomore guard Amber Neace joined Fuller with 16 points. Sophomore forward Lauren Martin chipped in 10.
The Blue Raiders remain tied atop the MSC standings with Georgetown (Ky.) College -- who beat Campbellsville (Ky.) University in overtime today -- at 5-1. The Lady Patriots fall a game behind the leaders at 4-2.
In the nightcap, No. 22-ranked Cumberlands men used a 15-4 run late in the first half to help the Patriots to the 73-56 win over the host Blue Raiders.
Cumberlands (16-10, 4-2) used the first-half run to build a 36-28 lead heading into the locker room. The Patriots extended their lead in the second half by scoring 15 of the first 19 points of the half.
Lindsey Wilson -- who made just 35.8 percent (19-of-53) from the field, including 1-of-10 three-pointers -- never seriously threatened in the second half as the Patriots maintained a double digit lead throughout the second stanza.
The loss ended the Blue Raiders (16-10, 3-3) 12-game home winning streak as Cumberlands sweep the season series.
Cumberlands junior Luke Fitzgerald poured in a season-high 32 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the field and 14-of-15 from the free throw line. Fitzgerald also added 15 rebounds for the double-double.
Fitzgerald helped the Patriots shoot 60 percent (25-of-42) from the field. Cumberlands ended making half of its 12 three-pointers in the win.
Lindsey Wilson junior guard George White led the Blue Raiders with 16 points. Senior guard Donte' Williams added 13 in the loss.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action on Thursday, February 21, as the Blue Raiders host Campbellsville in a women's and men's doubleheader at Biggers Sports Center. The women's game is scheduled to tip-off at 6 p.m. CT with the men's game to follow.
