Top Ranked Men's Soccer Edged by No. 19 William Carey, 3-2

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- William Carey (Miss.) University won the battle of top-25 teams Friday as the 19th ranked Crusaders used a busy second half to defeat top ranked Lindsey Wilson College 3-2 at Warrior Field on the campus of Oak Grove High School.

Four of the five goals scored in the game were connected on in the second half. Leading 1-0 at halftime, William Carey matched the Blue Raiders after intermission for two goals each to tally the 3-2 decision.

Lindsey Wilson freshman Chris Ochieng and junior Carnell Learmond scored for the Blue Raiders in the 60th and 74th minutes, respectively.

William Carey took an early 1-0 lead in the 24th minute off a hand ball penalty by Lindsey Wilson inside the box. Crusader sophomore Jonny Fairbairn connected on the ensuing free kick to take the lead.

At halftime the Crusaders led the game in shots 7-3, while Lindsey Wilson had the edge in corner kicks (5-3) and saves (5-4).

After Ochieng's goal in the 60th minute knotted the score at 1-1, William Carey was the beneficiary of two back-to-back scores in the 72nd and 74th minutes to take a 3-1 lead.

Freshman Jasper Pykkola knocked in the first score off a rebound from a missed shot and two minutes later newcomer Reece Wilson added to the lead with a shot into the back of the Lindsey Wilson net.

Learmond tried to rally a comeback effort with his score just 45 seconds after Wilson's to bring the score to 3-2, but no other scores were made in the game.

Blue Raider freshman keeper Callum Christie finished the contest with five saves, while Crusader senior keeper Sean Mapson wrapped up four.

Shots were nearly equal for the game as Lindsey Wilson led in attempts 15-14. Six of the Blue Raiders shots were on goal, while William Carey placed eight towards the goal.
