Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. -- In a battle of top-5 teams, second ranked Lindsey Wilson College women's soccer fared better in every phase of the game with a 3-1 win against fifth ranked William Carey (Miss.) University Friday at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
The Blue Raiders attempted double the shots of the previously undefeated Crusaders (14-7), collected an advantage in saves (5-4) and tallied a 2-to-1 assist advantage on three goals.
Three different players scored for Lindsey Wilson (8-2-1, 1-0-0 MSC), while the first strike came from freshman midfielder Mia Persson in the 14th minute.
Fresh off a five-goal performance in the squad's 12-0 pasting of Campbellsville (Ky.) University on Sept. 29, Persson remained in an offensive groove with a well-placed rebound off a block.
Senior midfielder Lorna Heaton collected a cross-field pass from senior defender Yolanda Hamilton that she ripped for a deep shot that was blocked by William Carey junior keeper Jackie DeNova. Persson possessed the swatted ball inside the box for an easy tap in to give the Blue Raiders a 1-0 lead.
Persson's goal would be the only score of the first half. Leading 1-0 at the break, the Blue Raiders outshot William Carey 5-1. The opening half was played at a free-flowing pace with only five fouls committed in the frame.
Lindsey Wilson continued a strong defensive showing in the second half. The Crusaders (9-1-0, 0-0-0 GCAC) were rarely allowed a solid possession on their side of the field, while their keeper, DeNova, was kept extra busy by the Blue Raiders.
Freshman midfielder Saeda Sueki continued her red-hot play with Lindsey Wilson's second goal in the 58th minute. The newcomer entered the contest with four goals in the last two games and then proceeded to rocket the shot of the night against the Crusaders.
Hamilton set up Sueki with a pass just across midfield on the Blue Raider's side. From over 30 feet outside the box, Sueki instinctively turned and fired a deep ball that nicked the cross bar before rattling home into the back of the net for a 2-0 Lindsey Wilson advantage.
Action stalled after Sueki's jaw-dropping stunner until the 82nd minute when both teams were able to score.
Hamilton struck first after taking a pass from junior midfielder Caitlin Burke at the top of the box. The St. Thomas, Jamaica native showed off some fancy footwork to break down her defender and kick a crisp shot on the ground for a goal in the right corner of the net.
Forty seconds later, William Carey senior midfielder Karina Almendarez put up the Crusaders lone goal with a close-range attempt with the game winding down to make the score 3-1.
Lindsey Wilson seemed to be around the William Carey goal all night, leading to the large differential in shots. Although losing her shutout near the end of the game, Blue Raider senior keeper Carrie Revlett was a leader on defense all night, grabbing five saves on seven Crusader shots.
The Blue Raiders enter a stretch of five Mid-South Conference games, starting at 5 p.m. on Oct. 7 against University (Ky.) of the Cumberlands in the first game of a doubleheader with the men's team at home.
