Women's Basketball Races into NAIA's Second Round with 63-51 Win Over Westmont

Box Score

JACKSON, Tenn. -- For the second straight year, the Lindsey Wilson College women's basketball team advanced into the second round in the NAIA Division I Women's Basketball National Championship at Oman Arena.

The fifth-seeded Blue Raiders (25-8) pulled off the only upset of the day with a 63-51 win over fourth-seeded Westmont (Calif.) College in Wednesday's final game.

Lindsey Wilson advances to face top-seeded Union (Tenn.) University at 6:15 p.m. CT on Friday, March 20. Union is one of seven top seeds to move into the second round with wins on Wednesday.

The Warriors jumped out to a pair of early three-point leads before the Blue Raiders assumed control of the game en route to 32-20 at halftime.

Westmont once again came out of the locker room and seized the momentum cutting the Lindsey Wilson lead to nine before the Blue Raiders ran away with the game. Lindsey Wilson led by as many as 23 before settling for the 63-51 win. Westmont's season ends at 22-9.

"We played pretty well for about 30 minutes tonight," Lindsey Wilson women's basketball coach John B. Wethington. "We had lapses, especially down the stretch, but overall, I'm pleased with our effort tonight."

The Lindsey Wilson effort produced a dominating performance on the glass as the Blue Raiders out-rebounded the Warriors 48-22.

"We really felt coming in that rebounding would be one of the keys to the game," Wethington said. "Our ladies just went after every rebound and that really helped us keep possessions alive and end their chance to put-back baskets."

Lindsey Wilson College sophomore center Viktoria Krell led the charge on the boards. The Mid-South Conference Player of the Year pulled down 16 rebounds to go along with her 16 points. It is her NAIA-leading 19th double-double of the season.

In addition to winning the rebounding battle, the Blue Raiders limited the Warriors -- who entered the game shooting 42 percent from the field for the season -- to 36.8 percent (21-of-57), including 5 for 24 from three-point range.

"I thought we did a pretty good job of challenging the majority of their shots," Wethington said. "Again, outside of the 25 turnovers, I thought we played pretty well."

Those 25 turnovers resulted in 28 Westmont points. That coupled with the Blue Raiders 11-of-20 free throw shooting kept the game from getting out of hand late.

Senior forward Ewa Bukowska added 16 points and sophomore guard Diondra Anthony chipped in 10.

Westmont's Alisha Heglund was the only Warrior in double figures. She finished with 13 points.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action against Union at 6:15 p.m. CT on Friday.
