Women's Soccer Ties Martin Methodist in Battle of Top-10 Teams

Box Score

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- After 120 minutes of play, fourth ranked Lindsey Wilson College and seventh ranked Martin Methodist (Tenn.)College ended a battle of NAIA women's soccer heavyweights in a 0-0 tie.

The Blue Raiders and Redhawks took a combined 23 shots, including 13 on goal to no avail Friday in the nightcap of the KELME Classic at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.

Still, the competition between two top-10 teams had its exciting moments.

In the game's 12th minute, Lindsey Wilson sophomore defender Heini Metsola ripped a shot from the far left corner of the field that skimmed the crossbar before rolling back into play.

Martin Methodist (3-1-1) had a similar opportunity in the 73rd minute when freshman midfielder Daniel Sofer shot from just outside the right corner of the box.

Sofer's line-drive effort missed every Blue Raider defender and slipped by senior keeper Carrie Revlett. The shot, however, didn't miss nicking the inside of the post, rejecting the Redhawks best opportunity to break the tie.

At intermission LWC (4-2-1) had taken five shots, while Martin Methodist had attempted four.

Blue Raider sophomore midfielder Ida Gregersen accounted for two of the attempts, with the first sailing just high (24th minute) and the other saved by Redhawk sophomore keeper Hanit Schwarz in the 44th minute .

Martin Methodist was aggressive in the second period, taking six shots to Lindsey's four.

The Redhawk offensive attack, including four shots inside the box, gave Revlett the opportunity to shine. The veteran's savvy play was a useful resource as she secured four saves in the second period.

In two overtime periods only one shot was taken by either team. Martin Methodist junior midfielder Simone Souza fired the close-range shot in the 99th minute, however Revlett was there once again to make the save.

The goalkeepers were kept busy for the duration as Revlett finished with eight saves and Schwarz tallied five. Revlett had just 21 saves through six games entering the contest.

In the first game of the night, 23rd ranked Graceland (Iowa) University slipped past Trinity Christian (Ill) 4-3.

The KELME Classic resumes at 5 p.m. CT on Saturday, Sept. 19 with Trinity Christian taking on Martin Methodist. In the 7 p.m. classic finale, Lindsey Wilson faces Graceland University.
