Hot-Shooting Women's Basketball Routs Morris 99-67

Box Score

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- It became clear very early that Lindsey Wilson College women's basketball head coach John B. Wethington would register his 400th career win on Friday as the 18th ranked Blue Raiders were too much for Morris (S.C.) College in a 99-67 win at Biggers Sports Center.

Shooting just 36.9 percent from the field and 20 percent from the 3-point line, the Hornets never stood a chance.

Led by senior Bethany Spillman with 11 points and 10 rebounds, Lindsey Wilson (1-0) put together a 65.5 percent shooting night from the field and 46.2 percent from three to overwhelm Morris (0-1).

With the shots falling so effortlessly for Lindsey Wilson, it took away from the fact that the Hornets came to play on the glass. Morris matched the Blue Raiders in rebounds 34-34, but that was about where the similarities ended. 10-6, 36-8

Leading 10-6 with 16 minutes to play in the first half, the Blue Raiders went on a 26-2 run over the next eight minutes with senior Viktoria Krell and sophomore Ashley Rainey having anything they wanted in the post.

Krell finished with 22 points and four assists, while Rainey tallied 13 points, five rebounds, five steals, three blocks and an assists. Neither Krell nor Rainey played more than 22 minutes.

Sophomore Sarah Gillis was in charge of the offense from the get go, distributing the ball for eight assists while also scoring four points and swiping a pair of steals.

The Bloomfield, Ky., native's most impressive stat of the night may have been committing just one turnover against the athletic Hornet defense.

Two good signs for Lindsey Wilson were the aggressiveness from Spillman, as she would not be denied crashing the boards en route to her team-high 10 rebounds, and the improved outside shooting by junior Michelle Copley.

Just a 24.2 percent shooter from behind the arc last season, Copley stepped up to hit 2-of-3 3-pointers against Morris to finish with six points and two steals in 11 minutes of action.

A pair of guards, senior Diondra Anthony and junior Taylor Lockridge also finished in double figures scoring 10 points each. Anthony also dished out four assists with just one turnover.

Lindsey Wilson held a 55-26 lead at halftime and spent much of the second half getting plenty of minutes for its reserves.

Top performers off the bench were freshman Laura Skudra with nine points and two rebounds and sophomore Brtiney Payne with five points and six rebounds.

Morris was led by Shaniqua Campbell with 18 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Ameisha Owens and Erica Wilkerson also tossed in double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 6 p.m. CT on Nov. 12 at Bethel (Tenn.) College in the Bethel University Classic.
