Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Eric McPherson's shot at the buzzer from near the top of the key sailed short, giving 15th ranked Pikeville (Ky.) College the 79-78 win in overtime at Biggers Sports Center on Saturday.
The Bears' Justin Hicks knocked down a shot in the paint with 14 seconds to play to put them ahead by one. Then Kalen Kimberland pushed the ball down court and missed a bank shot with four seconds on the clock.
Pikeville (18-4, 5-3 MSC) knocked the ball out of bounds after the Kimberland miss allowing Lindsey Wilson (12-12, 3-5 MSC) to set up for one more game-winning attempt.
McPherson caught the ball behind the three-point line, made a cut to the left, before pulling up for a shot that never reached the rim as time expired.
For a large portion of the game, the idea of going into overtime seemed like a long shot as the Blue Raiders led by as many as 17 points in the first half (39-22) with under a minute left in the half.
Lindsey Wilson remained in control the majority of the second half, leading be eight with just fewer than three minutes to play (66-58). Then the Bears knocked down three straight field goals and got a pair of free throws from Hicks to tie the game (68-68) and force the contest into overtime.
Pikeville took its first lead of the game as the extra period got underway as Jonathan Clark hit a shot after being fouled by Jeremiah Diebler. Clark hit the ensuing free throw, giving the Bears a three-point lead.
The Blue Raiders eventually jumped back in front by one after Andrija Tintor also connected on an and-one situation with a running jumper and free throw to make the score 78-77 with 29 seconds to play.
Then Hicks got free for his made jumper in the paint, giving Pikeville its final lead of 79-78 as Lindsey Wilson's last second chances failed to go down.
Kimberland paced Lindsey Wilson with a career-high 20 points and five rebounds, while Tintor added a double-double performance of 17 points and 10 rebounds.
The Blue Raiders shot 40.4 percent from the field, while Pikeville hit at a 39.7 percent clip. Lindsey Wilson hit 7-of-14 3-pointers while Pikeville hit just 23.8 percent (5-for-21) of its long-range attempts.
Lindsey Wilson also won the rebound battle over Pikeville, 45-38, but committed 20 turnovers to just nine for the Bears.
The Blue Raiders return to action at 8 p.m. CT on Feb. 11 against University of Rio Grande (Ohio) at Biggers Sports Center.
