FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Kalen Kimberland scored 10 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome third-seeded University of the Cumberlands as the Patriots topped the sixth-seeded Lindsey Wilson College men's basketball team 58-47 on Friday in the opening round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament at the Frankfort Convention Center.
Andrija Tintor added seven points for Lindsey Wilson, while Darren Ballou and Chase Spreen each added six points in the loss.
Cumberlands (21-9) was led by Chad Byron with 16 points and Tanner Jacobs with 11 points and eight rebounds.
The Patriots shot off to a 12-4 start as Lindsey Wilson was abused early on the boards. It took a 9-3 run by the Blue Raiders led by Ballou and Kimberland to climb back within two (15-13).
Joshua Cherry also hit a shot and got fouled during the rally, causing Travis Harvey to slam the ball for a technical foul. Kimberland knocked down the ensuing free throws to finalize the comeback.
The Patriots, however, responded with a 12-2 run after the technical free throws to take a 27-15 lead that would become the trend the rest of the game.
Cumberlands closed the half with a three pointer by Byron that hit three spots on the rim before falling, giving the Patriots their largest lead of the half of 16 points (39-23) at the break.
Tintor shot back at the opening of the second half with a 3-pointer of his own to pull within 13 points of the Patriots. Still, Lindsey Wilson was not able to pull any closer over the next six minutes as the Patriots led by 14 (45-31) with 14:28 to play in the game.
The 12-2 run by Cumberlands in the first half was arguably the most significant period of the game since it put Lindsey Wilson out of reach for good as it never recovered from the large deficit.
McPherson found Parker for a layup, then there was a made 3-pointer by Spreen that brought Lindsey Wilson within 11 (45-34) with 13:33 on the clock.
Cornell Thomas threw down a dunk with five minutes to play to pull Lindsey Wilson within 10 (55-45), then Ballou drilled a deep jump shot to bring the deficit into single digits on the next possession.
Trailing by nine (56-47) with 32 seconds left in the game, the Blue Raiders couldn't get any shots to fall as Cumberlands extended its lead with late free throws to seal the win and advance to the semifinals.
The Patriots will play the winner of No. 2-seed Georgetown (Ky.) College and No. 7-seed West Virginia University Institute of Technology at 3 p.m. CT on Saturday, March 6.
Lindsey Wilson ends its season with a 14-17 overall record and 5-9 mark in conference play.
