Softball Loses NAIA Tournament Opener 2-0 to Simon Fraser

Box Score

DECATUR, Ala. -- Despite limiting Simon Fraser (B.C.) University to just two hits, the Lindsey Wilson College softball team dropped its opener in the NAIA National Championship 2-0 after the Clan's Carly Moir belted a two-run home run in the second inning on Thursday at the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex.

Besides Moir's shot, the Clans only other hit came from second baseman Chrissy Caviglia.

Lindsey Wilson collected four hits without scoring a run as Alexis Rodgers, Megan Huckaby, Anyibell Ramirez and Morgan Paschall all reached safely in the Blue Raiders first national-tournament appearance.

While both Lindsey Wilson pitchers collected a hit, they also turned in strong pitching performances despite falling behind early on the home run over the left-field fence.

Ramirez took the loss, throwing 3.1 innings with two strikeouts while scattering two hits and walking two batters. Paschall finished the game and held Simon Fraser hitless for 2.2 innings with five strikeouts.

The two strikeouts for Ramirez were the lowest total all season for the junior when making the start. The lefty leads the nation in total strikeouts with 349.

Jennifer Van Egdom (3.0 innings) and Cara Lukawesky (4.0 innings) combined to shut out the Blue Raiders from the circle with Lukawesky earning the win.

Lindsey Wilson was held scoreless by the duo despite striking out only once as the nearly perfect performance (one error) by the Clan defense sealed the win.

The Blue Raiders weren't without chances to mount a comeback, but fell apart on the base paths in their best opportunity in the top of the third inning.

Batting third in the inning with one out, center fielder Emily Carnes reach first on a fielder's choice. Then Rodgers was hit by a pitch, followed by a single by Huckaby.

The base-running error occurred as Carnes was thrown out stretching at home on the Huckaby single, squandering an opportunity for leading-hitter Jamie Williams to be at the plate with the bases loaded.

Lindsey Wilson put a runner in scoring position just once - pinch runner Kristen Spear advanced to second on wild pitch in the top of the fourth inning -- the rest of the game as the Clan held on for the two-run win.

For the Blue Raiders, it was just their sixth time being shut out all season through 59 games.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 9:30 a.m. CT on Friday against Concordia (Ore.) University at the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex. Concordia opens pool play at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday against Bellevue (Neb.) University.
