Box Score SPRING ARBOR, Mich. -- After scoring 17 goals as a freshman in 2009, Mia Persson wasted little time getting back into the net in the fourth ranked Lindsey Wilson College women's soccer team's 1-0 win against Spring Arbor (Mich.) University in its season opener on Saturday.
With exactly one minute to play in the first half, Persson struck for the Blue Raiders from nearly thirty-yards out to give Lindsey Wilson a 1-0 lead which would prove the difference and remain for the rest of the game.
Apart from Persson's goal, the Lady Cougars and Blue Raiders played an even match in nearly every other category. Spring Arbor edged Lindsey Wilson in shots 13-12, while the Blue Raiders finished with a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Lindsey Wilson outshot the Lady Cougars 5-2 in the first period before Spring Arbor shot to life in the second with a 10-7 advantage. Included in the 10 shots was a pair of unsuccessful tries from inside the box late in the contest that could have tied the game.
Persson's unassisted goal was a high shot from long range that Lady Cougar goalkeeper Christina Riske got a hand on, but it had too much velocity as it slid past the right upright.
Blue Raider keeper Jordan Morrison was credited with four saves, while Riske hauled in five.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 7 p.m. CT on Thursday, Aug. 26 against Savannah (Ga.) College of Art and Design.
