ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- The Lindsey Wilson College men's soccer team's 15-match winning streak ended today as Lindenwood (Mo.) University upset the No. 1-ranked Blue Raiders 2-1 at the Lindenwood Classic.
The loss is the first for Lindsey Wilson since October 16, 2009 when the Blue Raiders lost at William Carey (Miss.) University 3-2.
Today, the Blue Raiders (3-1) out-shot the host Lions 16-5, but were unable to capitalize on their advantage.
Lindenwood (3-0) grabbed the 1-0 lead in the 21st minute as Hannes Backstrom scored his second goal of the season. The Lions took the 1-0 lead into the half.
Lindsey Wilson senior Carnell Learmond continued his scoring onslaught with a goal in the 48th minute to tie the game at 1-1. The Learmond goal is his team-leading sixth of the season. He has scored at least one goal in three straight games.
The match remained tied until Lindenwood's Simon Harrsen scored his first goal of the season in the 75th minute to give the Lions the 2-1 lead and eventually the win.
Lindsey Wilson sophomore Greg Hartley allowed both Lindewood goals while collecting a pair of saves. Victor Francoz earned the win in goal for the Lions stopping eight Lindsey Wilson shots.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 7:30 p.m. CT on Friday, Sept. 10, as the Blue Raiders host Auburn University Montgomery (Ala.) at Walter S. Reuling Stadium on the Lindsey Wilson campus. The game is the second of a women's and men's doubleheader. The LWC women are scheduled to kickoff at 5 p.m. CT.
