No. 1 Women's Soccer Coasts to 9-0 Win against West Virginia Tech

Box Score

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- When Diana Da Rocha's fourth-minute cross into the box found its way into the goal, the top ranked Lindsey Wilson College women's soccer team knew it was going to be a good day, putting away the West Virginia University Institute of Technology 9-0 on Sunday at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.

Lindsey Wilson used a 29-2 advantage in shots with a 13-1 lead in shots on goal to improve to 11-0-1 overall, while the Golden Bears dropped to 7-7-1 with the loss.

Seniors Diana Da Rocha and Ida Gregersen, juniors Mia Persson, Hannah Jonsson and Patricia Nielsen and freshmen Malin Sjoback, Laerke Lillelund Michaelsen and Therese Hagbyhn all scored goals for the Blue Raiders.

Lindsey Wilson senior goalkeeper Jordan Morrison went the distance for the shutout, only having to make one second-half save.

West Virginia Tech was led in shots by Creshana Jones and Carla Carvalho with one attempt each and Golden Bear keeper Bridget Leach collected four saves, while allowing all nine Blue Raider goals.

The offense got started for the Blue Raiders in the fourth minute as Da Rocha got loose on a run on the left side of the field and took what looked like a cross chance that curled into the front post and ricocheted into the back on the net for an unexpected, unassisted goal.

The Blue Raiders avoided their only scare of the day a few minutes later as West Virginia Tech's Jones avoided the defense of senior Heini Metsola to push a shot past Morrison that trickled just wide of the right post.

Lindsey Wilson struck again in the 12th minute as Persson cleaned up a blocked shot by Patricia Nielsen inside the box for a close-range goal past Leach.

The Blue Raiders' third goal came from Gregersen after receiving a touch pass from Nielsen just a few feet away from the goal that she easily put away with Leach not having any chance at a save.

Seventeen players made it onto the field for Lindsey Wilson in the first half, using numerous fresh legs to keep the ball moving, while continuing to limit the Golden Bears from any quality offensive chances.

It took Lindsey Wilson 17 minutes to find its first goal of the second half as Jonsson got a possession in the middle of the box that she controlled long enough to dribble around a defender for an unassisted goal in the 62nd minute that put the Blue Raiders up 4-0.

Four minutes after Jonsson's strike, Sjoback added to the Blue Raider attack with a tap in goal as she cruised down the middle of the box chasing a pass from her classmate Ayaki Shinada. Then just over a minute later sophomore Sabrina Tom played a perfect cross into the box that Da Rocha headed past the outstretched hands of the Golden Bear keeper.

The offensive onslaught continued two minutes later as Michaelsen took a touch pass from Persson four feet away from the goal that she finished into the back of the net to help the Blue Raiders take a 7-0 advantage with 20 minutes to play.

To go up 8-0, the Blue Raiders scored in the 79th minute as Hagbyhn made a run down the center of the box and scored an unassisted goal, then eight minutes later Nielsen made it a 9-0 game with a goal off a pass from junior Saeda Sueki.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 5 p.m. CT on Tuesday, Oct. 18 against the University of Pikeville (Ky.) in a Mid-South Conference matchup at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
