No. 4 Men's Soccer Beats No. 3 Rio Grande 3-2 in Overtime Thriller

RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- Playing in overtime for the first time this season, the fourth ranked Lindsey Wilson College men's soccer team fought through the pressure and handed third ranked University of Rio Grande (Ohio) a 3-2 loss on a goal by Eddy Campbell in the second minute of extra time on Saturday night.

With seven minutes left in regulation and holding onto a 2-1 lead, the Blue Raiders seemed to be well on their way to a win in the NAIA Game of the Week, but RedStorm junior Richard Isberner ended those thoughts with an equalizer in the 83rd minute, scoring on a rebound of his own miss.

Facing extra time, Lindsey Wilson (7-0, 3-0 MSC) had no intentions of staying on the field long with Rio Grande (7-1, 1-1 MSC) as it scored a golden goal from Campbell just over a minute into the period to bring the back-and-forth clash to a close.

Making matters even more frustrating for the Blue Raiders was the fact it once held a 2-0 lead just over 23 minutes into the game.

Senior Samuel Asante struck first, putting Lindsey Wilson up 1-0 in the 11th minute off an assist by Campbell on a rebound in front of the goal. Thirteen minutes later Campbell scored his first goal of the game off an assist by freshman Philip Sandgren to give the Blue Raiders more breathing room at 2-0.

After the RedStorm climbed back within one goal with a 30th-minute score by senior Neil Harries, neither team scored again for 53 minutes until Isberner's tying strike.

Playing the golden-goal format in overtime, it would be the first team to score that would win the top-five battle, allowing Campbell's quick score to end the game off an assist from junior Lebogang Moloto.

With two goals against the RedStorm, Campbell has now scored six goals on the season.

Lindsey Wilson is now 7-3-0 all-time against Rio Grande after losing to the RedStorm 2-0 last season on Nov. 11.

Neither team held an advantage in shots as Rio Grande finished with a 15-14 advantage, while both teams finished with eight shots on goal.

Each team's goalkeeper played all 92 minutes of the game with Lindsey Wilson freshman Yuta Nomura picking up the win with seven saves. Rio Grande's Jack Marchant closed the game with five saves and the three goals allowed.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 7 p.m. CT on Saturday, Oct. 8 against Shawnee State (Ohio) University at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
