No. 1 Women's Soccer Upset by No. 8 Concordia 2-1 in NAIA Quarterfinals

Box Score

DECATUR, Ala. -- Hannah Scott broke open a 1-1 tie in the second half with a 71st-minute goal and top seeded Lindsey Wilson College couldn't connect on its late-game chances as No. 8 seed Concordia (Ore.) University pulled off the 2-1 upset in the quarterfinals of the NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship on Wednesday at the Jack Allen Complex.

Lindsey Wilson's season comes to an end on its first loss of the year, finishing 19-1-2, while Concordia (18-4-1) advances to Friday's national semifinals against Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) University at 1:30 p.m. CT.

It didn't take long for Concordia to show the Blue Raiders it came to play as Alex Thomas scored in just the fourth minute from near point-blank range after being set up near the goal by a pass from her teammate Kaylynn Winwood.

Eight minutes later the Blue Raiders responded with an equalizer as freshman Laerke Lillelund Michaelsen pushed a pass to junior Mia Persson just outside the goal box.

The Sjobo, Sweden native gathered herself and rocketed a shot past Concordia goalkeeper Tori Talbutt to knot the score at one goal each.

For the next 60 minutes neither team could score as numerous soft attacks and missed corner-kick attempts were either knocked out by the defenders or wrapped up by the keepers.

Facing a tie game with just under 20 minutes to play, the Cavaliers got a burst of late energy as Scott sent in her goal from just inside the penalty box with an assist by Jasmine Ayala.

Michaelsen nearly tied the game again five minutes later after a scramble for possession around the Cavalier goal ended with her shot rolling just wide right.

The chances continued for Lindsey Wilson in the 81st minute as sophomore Elizabet Madjarac sent a cross into the box where it sat untouched in front of the keeper for a few seconds.

If any Blue Raider could have made it up to the ball, any type of touch could have sent it into the goal. However, Concordia's defenders built a wall around the ball, allowing Talbutt to pick it up unhurried.

In one final attempt to send the game into extra time senior Ida Gregersen moved the ball all the way to the edge of the box with just under 30 seconds to play, but her shot didn't have enough power behind it to get past Talbutt.

Concordia led the game in shots 10-6 and shots on goal 6-2, allowing Lindsey Wilson senior keeper Jordan Morrison to make a game-high four saves with the two goals allowed.

Talbutt finished the game making just one save and allowing the lone Lindsey Wilson goal.
