No. 16 Women's Basketball Turns up Heat against West Virginia Tech, Wins 86-62

Box Score

MONTGOMERY, W. Va. -- After losing two straight games for the first time this season, the 16th ranked Lindsey Wilson College women's basketball team made sure there wouldn't be a third, routing the West Virginia Institute of Technology 86-62 on Thursday at the Neal Baisi Athletic Center.

Seniors Diondra Anthony and Viktoria Krell led the Blue Raider domination with 18 points each, while Krell also added 15 rebounds. Their classmate Bethany Spillman also added a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds and junior Ashley Rainey nearly added a third with 15 points and nine boards.

Brittany Crawford paced West Virginia Tech with 17 points and Ashley Blaney added eight points and 11 rebounds.

Lindsey Wilson head coach John B. Wethington had a lot to be proud of as his team never let off the gas against the Golden Bears.

"We wanted to compete, play with a lot of emotion and finish," Wethington said. "It was a good game to come out and get a lot of things done. We improved our man-to-man defense and did a nice job crashing the boards.

"I was really pleased with our defense. I thought (Ashley) Rainey did a nice job not letting West Virginia Tech get around her."

Avoiding a slow start wasn't a problem for the Blue Raiders as Anthony knocked down a jumper and two free throws to cap off a 14-6 opening run. The Golden Bears cut the deficit to eight on a shot by Blaney in the paint (18-10) but failed to get any closer the rest of the half.

With the score at 25-14 in favor of Lindsey Wilson after a basket by Harper, the Blue Raiders went on an 8-0 run to extend the lead to 19 points.

The first-half offensive surge was far from over as the next five minutes saw Lindsey Wilson soar ahead by as many as 25 points (48-23) on a 3-pointer by Spillman with just over a minute left in the half.

At halftime, Lindsey Wilson (18-6, 9-4 MSC) led 48-27 and was shooting 41.7 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from behind the arc (5-for-11). Fourteen first-half turnovers and 10 team fouls didn't help the Golden Bears comeback effort either.

The Blue Raiders got to the free-throw line 19 times in the half and were led by Spillman's 4-for-4 showing from the stripe. The Blue Raiders hit 13 of the 19 attempts for 68.4 percent.

West Virginia Tech (4-19, 1-12 MSC) struggled throughout the first half with Blaney as the only bright spot, tallying eight points and seven rebounds. The team shot 34.3 percent from the field and a dismal 12.5 percent (1-for-8) from 3-point range.

The first four minutes of the second half weren't pretty for the Golden Bears. Much like the quick surge to open the game, Lindsey Wilson put together a 13-2 run to lead 61-29.

With the lopsided score, the Blue Raiders' Britney Payne got extended playing time off the bench and converted with an assist to Krell in the paint to put Lindsey Wilson in front 63-29 as the outcome looked to be a lock for a Blue Raider win.

Payne's dish to Krell gave her three assists and three rebounds as Krell jumped up to 14 points and 12 rebounds, adding her 14th double-double of the season.

After two straight games with career-high scoring outputs, Anthony had no problem keeping the momentum going against the Golden Bears. The senior hit a pair of free throws with under 10 minutes to play, giving her 18 points and putting Lindsey Wilson up by 25 (77-42).

Rainey was the lone starter on the court with 6:13 to play and the Blue Raiders holding an 82-47 lead. Reserve junior Taylor Lockridge made it on the box score quickly, adding seven points after knocking down her third 3-pointer of the season.

The Blue Raiders finished the game with a 54-42 advantage on the glass and outshot the Golden Bears 40.5 to 37.1 percent from the field. The Blue Raiders hit seven three pointers for 36.8 percent and hit 19-of-27 free throws.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday at the University of Rio Grande in Rio Grande, Ohio.
