Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- National player of the year candidate Whitney Ballinger was held to just 10 points and seven rebounds, but fourth ranked Campbellsville (Ky.) University got strong performances from the rest of its starters to outlast 12th ranked Lindsey Wilson College 76-67 on Thursday at the Powell Athletics Center.
Sophomore Ashley Rainey led Lindsey Wilson (21-7, 12-5 MSC) with 29 points, nine rebounds and two blocks and senior Viktoria Krell poured in a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Diondra Anthony added 14 points and five assists in the loss.
Courtney Clifton led all Tiger scorers with 17 points, while Courtney Danis finished with 16 points and hit a team-high two 3-pointers.
The Blue Raiders never led in the loss earlier in the season in Columbia, but got the lead quickly in the first half with the games first points. Still, the early advantage didn't do much good as the Tigers built a 21-10 lead just nine minutes into the first half.
Lindsey Wilson wasn't completely out of the game in the half as it clawed back within six, but an 8-0 run by Campbellsville (24-3, 16-1 MSC) put the deficit back into double figures and the Blue Raiders spent the rest of the half playing even basketball and enter halftime down 11 (42-31).
Campbellsville built and held on to its lead by controlling the backboards in the half with a 20-15 rebounding advantage, including an 11-3 lead on the offensive glass.
Ballinger - who averages over 23 points a game - was limited to eight points in the half on 2-of-9 shooting from the field. Rainey had the best half for the Blue Raiders with 16 points and five rebounds, including a 4-of-5 mark from the free-throw line.
After the Blue Raiders couldn't seem to get an easy rebound to start the game, the second half rebounding battle belonged to Lindsey Wilson, leading to drawing within one of the Tigers not even eight minutes into the second half.
Campbellsville answered with a run of its own to pull ahead by six points, but the tone was set for a back-and-forth battle the rest of the way.
With Ballinger continuing to be ineffective, the senior was pulled from the game for a stint that allowed Lindsey Wilson to get back within four points on a 3-pointer by junior Tiffany Williams who got her first open look of the game in the corner.
In crunch time, Lindsey Wilson was limited with just one timeout and starter Bethany Spillman fouling out. To make matters worse, Krell had to play the final three minutes with four fouls.
Danis made the play of the night for Campbellsville in the final two minutes with a 3-pointer in the corner to take the wind out of the Blue Raiders and help the Tigers hold on to their slight lead the rest of the way.
The teams ended up even on the glass at 32 rebounds each and the Blue Raiders outshot Campbellsville from the field 52.9 percent to 44.1 percent. Lindsey Wilson took just four 3-pointers, hitting two, compared to six makes for Campbellsville from behind the arc.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday, Feb. 26 at St. Catharine (Ky.) College.
