Box Score FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Ashley Rainey scored 25 points and pulled down 14 rebounds but it wasn't enough to overcome the third-seeded Lindsey Wilson College women's basketball team shooting just 27.7 percent as it lost to second-seeded Shawnee State (Ohio) University 66-62 on Saturday in the semifinals of the Mid-South Conference Tournament at the Frankfort Convention Center.
Senior Bethany Spillman added 12 points on 3-of-10 shooting from behind the arc and senior Viktoria Krell added a double-double of 11 points and 14 rebounds in the loss.
Alannah Sheets knocked down four 3-pointers to lead the Bears with 19 points, while Catrice Mitchell added 12 points in the post.
Lindsey Wilson (23-8) went down by as many as 18 points in the second half, but fought back to have a chance to tie the game with a 3-pointer by Spillman that was blocked with under five seconds to play.
It was turnovers galore with not a lot of scoring in the first half as Lindsey Wilson somehow found a way to go into halftime up one (26-25) despite shooting just 23.3 percent and turning the ball over seven times with just three assists.
The biggest reason for the first-half advantage may have been the defensive presence of senior Bethany Spillman. The Glasgow, Ky., native got her hands on multiple loose balls, keeping Shawnee State from extending its lead to more than five points in the half.
Krell had one of her worst performances of the season in the first half, missing all nine of her field-goal attempts, leaving Rainey in charge of cleaning up her misses in the post. Rainey tallied 15 points in the half.
Shawnee State (24-8) extended its lead to as many as 14 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half with Krell continuing to struggle and a stifling defense from the Bears finally slowing Rainey.
While a pair of 3-pointers by juniors Michelle Copley and Tiffany Williams kept the Blue Raiders close in the first half, the shooting from behind the arc fell apart in the later stages of the game. Lindsey Wilson finished 6-of-21 from 3-point range for 28.6 percent.
Lindsey Wilson trailed the Bears 57-39 with 7:46 to play, but went on an 8-0 run over the next four minutes to climb back within 10 at 57-47. Mitchell, however, ended the run with another basket in the paint on the next possession.
Spillman got the ball in the corner on the next Blue Raider possession and drained a three to make it a single-digit game again and then hit another three on the fast break to make it a six-point game with two minutes to play.
With under a minute to play, Mitchell got loose for another basket and Ballman made it to the free-throw line where she hit both free shots.
Down by eight with 35 seconds on the clock, Spillman came up with yet another three to bring the deficit to five (63-58). Ballman was sent to the line again and made both shots, followed by a make by Rainey at the line and Spillman cleaning up her miss with a put back to climb within four 65-61.
Then the unthinkable happened after Ballman missed the front end of bonus free throws and Anthony was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 8.8 seconds to play. The senior hit the first shot, but missed the last two, giving the Blue Raiders the ball down 65-62 with 6.2 seconds on the clock.
Copley took the inbounds pass and threw the ball to Spillman at the top of the key where the seniors shot was blocked by Alex Pohl, followed by a foul to send Pohl to the line where she hit one shot to give the Bears the 66-62 win.
Shawnee State shot 51 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from three to help win the game despite being outrebounded 46-32 by the Blue Raiders.
The Blue Raiders did a lot of their scoring from the free-throw line, hitting 20-of-31 shots, compared to just 10-of-13 by the Bears.
Lindsey Wilson - which looks to be an at-large selection into the NAIA National Championship - will have to wait until Wednesday to see where it is seeded in the field. The championship starts on March 16 at the Oman Arena in Jackson, Tenn.
