FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Fourth-seeded University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) rebounded from its first deficit of the second half to score the game's final four points and knock off the fifth-seeded Lindsey Wilson College men's basketball team 66-64 on Friday in the quarterfinals of the Mid-South Conference Tournament at the Frankfort Convention Center.
Lindsey Wilson (19-11) took a 64-62 lead with 3:29 remaining on a layup by senior Brandon Clemons. It followed game-tying free throws by sophomore Kalen Kimberland and gave the Blue Raiders their first lead since 25-23 with 5:09 to play in the first half. Kimberland had 11 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the line.
But it would also prove to be the final points of the season for the Raiders.
Cumberlands (18-10) tied the game on a pair of free throws by senior Tanner Jacobs with 2:05 remaining, and took the lead for good with 1:10 to play when senior Jared Cunningham scored on a left-handed bucket from in front of the rim. Cunningham led all scorers with 21 points and had six rebounds.
Lindsey Wilson had a chance to tie the game, as Clemons was fouled with 1.9 seconds left on a drive to the basket. He missed the first free throw, forcing Coach Paul Peck to call timeout to set the stage for an improbable tie.
Clemons missed the second toss on purpose, but the effort for the rebound was thwarted as a scramble for the ball ended the game.
Cumberlands broke open a tie game with a 14-2 run early in the second half and appeared to have the game in its grasp. Three different players scored four points during the run, which both began and ended with two free throws by Jacobs.
The latter two, coming with 12:40 to play, ended the 4:10 stretch with the Patriots on top 50-38. Jacobs recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
But Lindsey Wilson rallied, using a 9-0 run over 2 minutes to tie the game at 60. Seven points came from the line, with junior Charles Baker scoring the last five to tie the game with 5:29 left to set the stage for the furious finish.
Cunningham and Jacobs were joined in double figures by junior Matt Daniel for Cumberlands, who finished with 20 points.
