COLUMBIA, Ky. – With four and a half minutes left in double overtime, Martin Methodist's (Tenn.) Mor Efraim took a pass just six yards from the goal and booted it into the back of the net to lift the RedHawks over the Lindsey Wilson College women's soccer team 1-0 on Friday night at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
The finish was yet another classic in a recent run of close games between the two programs. Lindsey Wilson (12-3-1) last beat Martin Methodist (13-3-0) early in the 2007 season. Since then it has lost three times and tied twice, including a 2-2 draw last season.
Efraim's goal, her team-leading 20th of the season, gives the RedHawks a 6-5-2 advantage in the all-time series, while also snapping the Blue Raiders' current 10-game winning streak. Lindsey Wilson has played four overtime games this season with a 1-2-1 record.
Chances to score in the overtime periods were hard to come by as Lindsey Wilson had just one shot by Katarina Simic in the second 10 minutes. The Blue Raiders led the game in shots 12-11, but the RedHawks led in shots on goal 7-3.
Elizabet Madjarac, who fired three shots for Lindsey Wilson, had the best chance to score in regulation as her blast in the 79th minute soared just high.
Efraim's game winner in the 106th minute of play came just two minutes after Simic's overtime misfire. The RedHawks countered down the field where Jennifer Loewen delivered a pass straight ahead, deep into the box to set up the score.
Laerke Lillelund Michaelsen matched Madjarac for the team lead with three shots each, while Loewen led the way for Martin Methodist with five shots. Loewen and Efraim each finished with two shots on frame.
Loewen's game-winning assist was just her second assist of the season after also dishing one out in the last game against Bethel (Tenn.) on Tuesday.
The shutout loss was the first for the Blue Raiders since losing to Concordia (Ore.) 2-0 on Sept. 2, it also ends Mia Persson's run of games with double-digit goals at five.
Both teams finished with four corner kicks, while Martin Methodist had one more foul at 12-11.
Josephine Frigge finished with six saves for the Blue Raiders, while RedHawk keeper Meaghan Storie collected just three.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 5 p.m. CT on Tuesday against No. 23 Auburn-Montgomery (Ala.) for the regular-season finale and senior night at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
