COLUMBIA, Ky. – Mia Persson found the back of the net on two penalty kicks and scored again in the second half as Lindsey Wilson College beat Rio Grande (Ohio) 5-0 in the opening round of the Mid-South Conference Championship on Saturday at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
Both the Blue Raiders and RedStorm were awarded penalty kicks in the first eight minutes. Mia Persson finished hers for a goal, while Alexandria Davis was off the mark for Rio Grande.
Persson connected on another PK in the second half after a handball and Elizabet Madjarac fired a goal in the 59th minute. The duo combined for another score in the 70th minute as Madjarac found Persson in the middle of the box for an easy goal.
The Blue Raiders scored one more time in the 79th as Renee Hurd collected the ball off a block and dribbled around one defender for a clear look at the goal.
Shots went in Lindsey Wilson's favor 25-4, including a 12-1 advantage in shots on goal. Persson led the way with six shots, including three on frame, while four different RedStorm strikers took a shot.
The Blue Raiders took eight corner kicks on the night as Rio Grande was limited to none. Fouls did go in favor of the RedStorm, 7-1.
Blue Raider goalkeeper Josephine Frigge played 86 minutes with just one save, while Rio Grande's Allison Keeney went the distance, collecting seven saves.
Lindsey Wilson advances to Wednesday's semifinals where it will play either Georgetown (Ky.) or St. Catharine (Ky.) at Noon CT. The Blue Raiders are hosting the final two rounds of the championship in Columbia.
