CLEVELAND, Tenn. – After trading goals early in the first half, it was an own goal by Vanguard (Calif.) on a Lindsey Wilson College corner kick that have the second-ranked Blue Raiders a 2-1 win on Saturday against the No. 16 Lions on the final day of the Lady Flames Classic hosted by Lee University.

Mia Persson gave the Blue Raiders a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute on a shot that was chipped in to the far corner of the goal after she gathered a missed clear attempt by Vanguard.

The lead didn't last long as the Lions returned the favor in the 25th with a goal by Amanda Couch from eight yards out past Blue Raider keeper Josephine Frigge.

In a contest where Vanguard (4-1-0) outshot the Blue Raiders 19-11, it ended up being an errant touch by the Lions that gave Lindsey Wilson (3-2-1) the win.

Newcomer Renee Hurd served up a corner kick for Lindsey Wilson that ended up being sent into the back of the net by one of the Lions own players. Scored as an own goal, the Blue Raiders took a 2-1 lead in the 63rd minute and neither team scored again.

Vanguard took eight shots after the own goal, but just one was on goal as the rest all flew wide of the target. Lindsey Wilson got just two more chances to score, placing one on goal over the final 27 minutes.

Frigge finished with four saves for Lindsey Wilson, while Vanguard keeper Lauren Terry collected three saves.

The Lions led the game in most categories, including shots (19-11), corner kicks (9-3) and fouls (15-11). While there was a large advantage in total shots, shots on goal were only in favor of the Lions 6-5.

Persson paced the Blue Raiders attack with four shots, including two on frame, while Jordan Davidson fired seven shots for Vangaurd with three on goal.

Lindsey Wilson plays its next game at 4 p.m. CT on Tuesday at St. Catharine (Ky.), before returning home for the first time since Aug. 25 the next day against Bluefield (Va.) at 5 p.m.
