No. 1 Men's Soccer Shuts Out No. 25 St. Xavier 4-0, Wells Wins 500th

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Ray Wells' 500th career win came in easy fashion Saturday night as his top-ranked Lindsey Wilson College men's soccer team shut out No. 25 St. Xavier (Ill.) 4-0 at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.

Wells reaches the milestone with wins from stops at Lindsey Wilson, Georgia Southern and Andrew College. Saturday's win was his 436th at four-year institutions and 425th with the Blue Raiders, the job he's held for 23 seasons.

The Cougars entered the game with a 2-0-1 record, including a 1-0 win against fourth-ranked Rio Grande (Ohio). Even using a defensive-minded attack, St. Xavier couldn't stop Lindsey Wilson's opening strike.

Renan Serafim took control of the ball in the center of the field, 10 yards outside of the penalty box where he ripped a shot with his left foot that scooted past Cougar keeper A.J. Pfatschbacher. The fifth-minute goal held up as the game winner as St. Xavier never threatened the Blue Raider goal.

Lindsey Wilson (4-0) outshot its opponent 17-1, including an 8-1 lead in shots on goal. Philip Sandgren led the way with five shots, while Serafim added three. Kyle Breitenback issued the Cougars' lone shot which was on goal.

Pfatschbacher finished the contest with four saves and four goals allowed.

Three different Blue Raiders scored after Serafim, starting with Eddy Campbell in the 26th minute. It started with a beautiful through ball from Lebogang Moloto that skipped through the defense.

Lindsey Wilson wouldn't score again until the 76th minute when Sandgren took a pass from Serafim from midfield and scooted it past the Cougar keeper. Moloto finished the scoring with just seconds remaining off an assist from Sandgren.

Corner kicks went in favor of the Blue Raiders as well at 4-1, while St. Xavier had more fouls at 12-10.

The Blue Raiders return to action at 7 p.m. CT on Sept. 8 against No. 9 Auburn-Montgomery at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
