Women's Basketball Loses at Bluefield, 70-61

Box Score

BLUEFIELD, Va. – There was too much Tequila McNeal and not enough offense from Lindsey Wilson College as Bluefield (Va.) earned a 70-61 win at home on Sunday at Dome Gymnasium.

McNeal led all scorers with 26 points and Ram Janee Simmons led the game with 14 rebounds as the duo took control of the game to beat Lindsey Wilson for the first time in school history. The Blue Raiders led the all-time series 8-0.

Jasmine Brimm tallied a team-best 20 points for the Blue Raiders and Ashley Rainey and Kasey Litzinger chipped in with 11 each. Rainey also pulled down eight rebounds, but the Rams won the battle on the glass 38-34.

Bluefield had little trouble getting the ball to the rim in the early portion of the game, taking a quick 11-4 lead as Rainey was limited to just six minutes with two first-half fouls. Litzinger knocked down a three to help Lindsey Wilson climb within six with 10 minutes to play at 21-15.

Not much changed over the next five minutes as Brimm and McNeal traded threes on back-to-back possessions to keep the Bluefield lead at five with 5:46 left until halftime. Lindsey Wilson's Sarah Collins picked up her third foul to get sent to the bench as well, helping the Rams go on a 7-0 run.

Brimm and Litzinger came to the rescue again with a pair of big shots late in the half to make sure the Rams didn't pull away to a double-digit lead. After Brimm's three at the buzzer fell short, it was Bluefield with a 36-29 lead at the half.

Ashley White wasted no time giving the Rams a 10-point lead with her three on the team's first possession of the second half. Gillis found her first two for the Blue Raiders not long after, but a White layup on the next trip kept the lead at 10.

Lindsey Wilson found some success using a high-low offense between Collins and Rainey to chop the deficit down to six points, but Bluefield's McNeal continued to be the answer as the Blue Raiders got no closer over the final four minutes.

The Rams struggled from long range, hitting just 4-of-17 shots, but hit 45 percent from the field, compared to 40 percent for the Blue Raiders. Three-point shooting helped the Blue Raiders stay close at times, hitting 33.3 percent from deep (6-18).

The loss drops the Blue Raiders to 14-7 overall and 5-6 in Mid-South Conference play, while the Rams bump up to 14-8 and an even 6-6 in the MSC.

Lindsey Wilson welcomes Rio Grande to Biggers Sports Center on Thursday. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
