Box Score PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – Lindsey Wilson College led by as many as 11 points in the first half, but foul trouble to Ashley Rainey and Jasmine Brimm marred the effort, helping No. 15 Shawnee State (Ohio) claim a 74-68 win on Thursday at Frank and Janis Waller Gymnasium.
In just 24 minutes, Brimm led the Blue Raiders (10-5, 2-4 MSC) with 20 points, while Sarah Gillis added 15 and Sarah Collins chipped in with 12. Gillis finished with three made 3-pointers. Rainey tallied 10 points in just 16 minutes on the floor.
Alannah Sheets knocked down four threes to finish with a game-high 26 points for Shawnee State (13-3, 4-2 MSC) and Schera Sampson controlled the paint for 22 points and 16 rebounds in Rainey's absence.
Lindsey Wilson trailed by a single point with three minutes left in the game, but Sheets came through with a timely three and Sampson was strong down the stretch to thwart the Blue Raider comeback.
The outside shots weren't falling for Shawnee State early in the contest and Lindsey Wilson was having no problem getting to the basket for a pair of layups by Brimm and Rainey. A contested three by Gillis at the 11:21 mark made the Blue Raider lead 18-14.
Rainey finished her second three-point play a minute later to extend the lead to 23-16. But around the six-minute mark Rainey had two fouls and Brimm picked up her third, sending both of the team's leading scorers to the bench the rest of the half.
Gillis helped in their absence with a timely three to push the lead to 12, but Shawnee State still made a small comeback, getting within eight with four minutes to play at 30-22.
The Bears continued to fight back the rest of the half. Pohl banked in a shot from the foul line and Sheets hit a layup to cut the Lindsey Wilson lead to four. A pair of late free throws made the score at halftime 30-28.
Not even three minutes into the second half Rainey picked up two more fouls and Brimm was called for her fourth as well, forcing the Blue Raiders to play without the duo once again. This time the Bears took advantage for a lead, pulling ahead by five after a pair of threes at 49-44 with 11:27 to play.
Down by seven at the 10-minute mark Lindsey Wilson used a non-conventional 7-0 run to tie the score at 52. It started with Laura Skudra connecting on a layup, followed by Kasey Litzinger hitting a layup and being fouled for a three-point play.
Bear coach Robin Hagen-Smith argued the call and was issued a technical foul, allowing Litzinger to add a pair of free throws to knot the score.
The tie was short lived as Shawnee State answered with its own 6-0 run to lead 58-52 over the next two minutes.
Making matters worse, Rainey picked up her final foul on a charge call just seconds after entering the game. Gillis and Brimm each came through with layups in the minutes after the foul, but the Bears still led by seven after the final media timeout.
Out of the break, Collins finished a layup off a nice entry pass from Brimm and Gillis hit two free throws after a Skudra steal and suddenly it was a one-possession game again at 67-64 with three minutes left.
Brimm made it a one-point game after completing a three-point play, but Sheets knocked the wind out of the Blue Raiders with a three on the next possession to put the Bears back up by four.
Lindsey Wilson took a timeout with 11.8 seconds on the clock and trailing by five at 73-68 but Litzinger's three was blocked by Sheets to allow Shawnee State to finish the game with a 74-68 win.
The Blue Raiders look to bounce back at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday at Rio Grande (Ohio).
