Rainey's High Marks Lead Women's Basketball Over Rio Grande 80-68

Box Score

COLUMBIA, Ky. – It was a big night for Ashley Rainey on Thursday as she racked up 35 points and 15 rebounds to, at times, single handedly keep Lindsey Wilson on top of Rio Grande (Ohio) for an 80-68 win at Biggers Sports Center.

Jasmine Brimm joined her in double figures with 25 points, while Rainey also led the game in rebounds with 15. Brimm ended up with the game high in assists with seven.

Shardai Morrison-Fountain was the best scorer for the RedStorm (6-16, 0-13 MSC) with 24 points and Sarah Bonar backed her up with 18.

Lindsey Wilson (15-7, 6-6 MSC) trailed for the first 11 minutes of the game, but found a lead with 6:55 left in the first half and never relinquished it.

Every pass was contested for the Blue Raiders in the first half as the feisty RedStorm defense forced them in to seven turnovers. During that period Rio Grande put together leads as high as six points at 10-4 on a Tinesha Taylor free throw.

The lead lasted nearly six minutes until Rainey tied the game at 17 all on a layup after a nifty entry pass from Tara Arnold at the top of the key. The Blue Raiders regained a two-point lead on their next possession on another Rainey basket in the paint.

Rio Grande cut the deficit to one and ultimately tied the score again at 23-23 on a shot from Morrison-Fountain. Lindsey Wilson scored the next five points in the final two minutes before taking a 28-25 lead into halftime.

Rainey went to the free-throw line four times in the half, making three shots, to finish with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds by the break. Morrison-Fountain led the RedStorm with seven points after hitting the only three made so far in the game.

Lucky for Lindsey Wilson, it found its stroke from deep in the second half, knocking down five threes to take a lead as large as 13 in the half. The Blue Raiders never trailed in the game after halftime, although the RedStorm did cut the deficit to two points at the start of the half and three with six minutes left on a 3-pointer by Morrison-Fountain.

The Blue Raiders shot 43.8 percent from the field for the game, just a hair lower than Rio Grande at 44.6. Threes went the RedStorm's way as well at 30.8 percent to 23.8 percent, but Lindsey Wilson hit five more free throws and won the battle on the backboards 43-29 to help seal the win.

It's a quick turnaround for the Blue Raiders as No. 22 Shawnee State (Ohio) comes to Biggers Sports Center at 2 p.m. CT on Saturday.
