COLUMBIA, Ky. – For the second straight season, the fourth-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team is the Mid-South Conference Regular-Season Champion after beating No. 13 Georgetown 91-82 at Biggers Sports Center on Saturday.
The Blue Raiders improve to 16-3 in league play to capture the title with an overall mark of 26-3. They got a lift from Kalen Kimberland with 20 points to drop the Tigers to 21-7 overall and 13-6 in the MSC. The win is also Blue Raider head coach Paul Peck's 250th of his career at the school.
Allan Thomas gave his best performance to try and slow the Blue Raiders with a game-high 34 points and 12 rebounds. But with his team turning it over 20 times and Lindsey Wilson placing four in double figures scoring, there was just too much firepower for one man to overcome.
Kimberland was joined in double figures by DeAntra Scott with 16, Milton Watts had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Daronte' Clark chipped in with 13 points.
Vic Moses added 18 points and 10 boards for the Tigers down low and Monty Wilson finished with 11 points.
Both teams shot the ball well with Lindsey Wilson at nearly 51 percent from the field and Georgetown at 47. The Tigers shot 5 of 11 from three and the Blue Raiders hit 9-of-23 3-point tries. The outcome of the game came down to turnovers where Georgetown had 10 more in the game, leading to a 20-9 points-off-turnovers advantage for the Blue Raiders.
While Lindsey Wilson's bench outscored Georgetown's 25-9, it was rebounding where the Tigers had a big advantage, leading the battle on the boards 42-28.
It was a focused effort from the free-throw line as Lindsey Wilson hit 20 of 28 and Georgetown knocked down 19 of 25.
The Blue Raiders stormed out of the gate to take a 7-0 lead after a three from Chase Cox not even two minutes into the game. The lead quickly swelled to 17 at 28-11 after four more 3-pointers until Georgetown finally trimmed it to nine with 8:21 left on a Moses jumper.
Thomas hit a three in the final seconds of the half to put the Blue Raider lead at 43-36 heading in to the break. Nearly five minutes into the second half, Georgetown had fought back to tie the game at 51, using a 15-8 run to start the half.
Georgetown led by as many as four after the tie on another Moses jumper, but Lindsey Wilson had a 10-3 run of its own, paving the way to a seven-point lead with less than two minutes to play.
The Tigers never got closer than five the rest of the way as the Blue Raiders connected on 10 free throws in the final 1:45.
Now it's on the the regular-season finale at 8 p.m. CT on Monday with Campbellsville (Ky.) making its way to Biggers Sports Center.
