Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – Lindsey Wilson had a seven-point lead five minutes into the second half, but a dominant performance by Dace Bicane helped Cumberlands (Ky.) come back for a 73-61 win on Thursday at O. Wayne Rollins Arena.
Bicane finished with a game-high 24 points and was helped by three other teammates reaching double figures. Jackie Alexander and Erica Lane each had 11 and Jill Herman finished with 10 points.
For Lindsey Wilson, it was Ashley Rainey leading the way with a full night of 23 points, 14 rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Jasmine Brimm also reached double figured with 10 points and five rebounds.
Cumberlands, which shot just 35.3 percent in the first half, did its damage in the second frame, hitting at 51.9 percent to lead by as many as 13 points in the second half.
A bizarre first eight minutes included an injured player, confusion on foul shooters for a flagrant foul and bringing the game to a halt for blood on the floor. But intertwined in the issues was a closely contested game with the Patriots leading just 13-12.
The Blue Raiders finally got a little breathing room at 22-18 after Tara Arnold connected on a 3-pointer and Kasey Litzinger knocked down a pair of free throws. Cumberlands had a good run itself late in the half, scoring nine straight points, but the Blue Raiders fought back to trail just 33-32 at halftime.
Tight play continued in the second half as Rainey finished a 3-point play to give Lindsey Wilson a 45-40 lead with 11 minutes to play, but an Upchurch three and layup by Erica Lane quickly tied the game just 30 seconds later.
Cumberlands got back-to-back layups from Bicane and Lane to give it its largest lead of the game so far at 53-47. With just over eight minutes to play, Lindsey Wilson would have to find a way to stop the run as Brimm played with four fouls.
It didn't happen over the next five minutes as Lindsey Wilson continued to struggle on offense and Bicane finished a 3-point play of her own to put the Patriots up by seven. One thing in the Blue Raider's favor was team fouls, as they spent the final stages of the game in the double bonus.
Rainey was automatic from the stripe and Arnold hit her first two attempts of her career to get Lindsey Wilson back within five at 58-53. But the Patriots still couldn't be stopped, as Bicane took over down low to give them a 10-point advantage that the Blue Raiders never recovered from.
Lindsey Wilson finished shooting 38.8 percent from the field and 28.6 percent from behind the arc as Cumberlands earned the win with 42 percent shooting, despite a 13 percent showing from behind the arc.
The Patriots also edged Lindsey Wilson on the backboards 30-28 and forced Cumberlands into 22 turnovers.
Next up for Lindsey Wilson is a trip to Lebanon, Tenn., at 2 p.m. CT on Saturday to take on Cumberland.
