CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson College men's basketball team fell in the waning seconds at Campbellsville Thursday night 65-63.
The Blue Raiders fall to 12-10 overall and 3-7 in Mid-South Conference play. Campbellsville improves to 9-10 on the season and 4-6 in the Mid-South with the win.
Keshaun Mayfield recorded a career-high 17 points in the loss. Daronte' Clark finished behind him with 14 points while Tyrie Orosco came off the bench to lead the team with 10 rebounds.
The game opened with the two teams exchanging leads until the game became tied at 15-15 after a Clark three pointer. Mayfield scored all eight of his first-half points in the opening six minutes. Campbellsville would score the next two baskets to give the Tigers a five-point lead at 20-15, the largest of the first half.
The Blue Raiders would chip away at the Campbellsville lead when a Tony Menton field goal cut it to two at 27-25 with 3:26 to play in the first. Following a Campbellsville turnover, D'on Hall would give the Blue Raiders a 28-27 lead with a three-point basket. The Tigers would score the next four points until Hall answered with another three to tie the game at 31-31. Campbellsville would hit two free throws to give them a 33-31 lead heading into the half.
Lindsey Wilson shot 39.4 percent from the field in the first and made 5-of-13 three-point attempts. The Tigers shot 42.9 percent from the field, but just 16.7 percent from beyond the arc. The Blue Raiders held the advantage in rebounds 21-17. Lindsey Wilson made it to the free-throw line just once compared to 11 attempts for the Tigers.
Lindsey Wilson opened the second half on a 6-0 run to take a 39-33 lead and force a Campbellsville timeout. The Tigers would respond with a 10-0 run to retake the lead at 43-39 with 14:56 to play.
The teams would exchange baskets as Campbellsville continued to hold their slight lead stretching it to 54-49 with 7:38 to play. Trailing 58-53, Lindsey Wilson would use a 6-0 run to take the lead at 59-58 and force a Campbellsville timeout with 4:32 left.
After a Campbellsville free throw to tie it, Anthony Crenshaw would make both shots of his one-and-one free throws to give Lindsey Wilson a 61-59 lead with 2:42 to play. A pair of Tiger free throws would tie the game again at 61-61.
With five seconds left on the shot clock, Campbellsville would hit a three to take a 64-61 lead. Hall would hit a two pointer on the ensuing possession to cut the lead to 64-63. The Blue Raiders would foul and send Darius Clement to the line for two shots. Clement would make the first but miss the second, giving Lindsey Wilson the ball with 14.7 seconds left.
The Blue Raiders inbounded the ball, but were unable to find the open man and called with a five-second violation with 2.3 seconds to play. Campbellsville turned the ball over on the inbounds play and Mayfield got off a half-court heave, but it went just left of the rim, ending the game 65-63.
The Tigers outshot Lindsey Wilson from the field 41.8 percent to 39.7 percent in a game that saw 10 lead changes. Both teams struggled from beyond the arc, the Blue Raiders hitting just 6-of-21 while the Tigers went 5-of-24. Lindsey Wilson held the rebounding advantage 40-32.
Campbellsville was led by Clement with 21 points on the night. Eric Gaines added 11 points and led the team with nine rebounds.
The Blue Raiders return to action when they travel to St. Catharine on Saturday for a 3 p.m. CT tipoff.
