Women's Soccer falls to Embry-Riddle 2-1 in top-10 battle

Box Score

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- No. 6-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's soccer came up just short in a 2-1 loss to No. 2-ranked Embry-Riddle (Fla.) today at Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium.

The Blue Raiders -- playing for the first time since Oct. 3 -- drop to 7-3-2 on the season. The loss is the second this season to the NAIA's second-ranked team. The other loss came in overtime to the third-ranked team. Embry-Riddle improves to 12-1 on the season with the win.

Lindsey Wilson's Lyana Perez scored the lone Blue Raider goal off a Karin Bernet assist in the 71st minute to tie the game at 1-1.

Bettina Brulhart started the scoring play with a corner kick from the left side deep into the penalty area. After the ball ricocheted off multiple players in the box, Bernet collected the ball and sent a strike towards the goal that Perez redirected past Embry-Riddle goalkeeper Olivia Lynch for the equalizer.

Perez's goal -- her seventh of the season -- ended a string of nearly 25 minutes where the Blue Raiders controlled the majority of the play.

While Lindsey Wilson tied the game, the goal seemed to serve as a wake-up call for the Eagles.

Embry-Riddle turned its offensive game up a notch over the next nine minutes that culminated in the eventual game-winning goal.

Helena Hansson played a through ball from the midfield to a streaking Andrea Froshaug down the left flank. Froshaug dribbled into the penalty box and hit a blast past Blue Raider keeper Johanna Henriksson -- who charged off her line -- for the 2-1 lead.

Lindsey Wilson nearly tied the game in the waning seconds of the match only to be turned away by Lynch.

Lynch came off her line to clear a back pass with just over 10 seconds left in the match. Lynch's kick traveled directly to Brulhart standing 25 yards from the goal. Brulhart sent a shot on target only to have Lynch scamper back for the save. Lynch finished the match with three saves.

Embry-Riddle scored the game's first goal in the 10th minute to take the 1-0 lead. Katherine Ebbs scored off an Isabelle Haaranen's assist to push the Eagles in front.

Embry-Riddle out-shot the Blue Raiders 9-7 for the match. Both teams put four shots on goal during the match.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action on at 5 p.m. CT on Sunday, Oct. 19, as the Blue Raiders host Pikeville (Ky.) in a Mid-South Conference match at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
