Box Score LEBANON, Tenn. – After trailing 1-0, the seventh-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team scored six-unanswered goals to upset No. 1-ranked Cumberland (Tenn.) 6-1 on Monday afternoon at Lindsey Donnell Stadium-Kirk Field.
The Blue Raiders (9-3-3, 6-0-1 MSC) clinched the Mid-South Conference regular-season title and the top seed at next month's MSC Tournament with the victory.
The Bulldogs (13-1-1, 6-1-0 MSC) looked to extend their 11-match winning streak after taking an early 1-0 lead in the 10th minute. Emily Shires fired a shot that hit the post and rebounded directly to Olivia Chu who buried the ball in the back of the net for the score.
Lindsey Wilson took little time to respond as the Blue Raiders found the equalizer in the 14th minute.
Amanda Kander took the ball down the middle outside the 18-yard box and passed ahead to Elizabet Madjarac, whose shot was saved by Cumberland goalkeeper Lindsay Kitson. The ball deflected off Kitson and over to Lyana Perez who struck the ball into the open net for the 1-1 tie.
Just 32 seconds later, Perez would give the Blue Raiders the lead.
Kander dribbled into the middle inside the box and had her shot stopped by a charging Kitson. The ball once again deflected right to Perez who buried her 11th goal of the season to give Lindsey Wilson a 2-1 lead.
The Blue Raiders would add a third goal in the 31st minute.
Anna Vig crossed a ball that ricocheted around the box before falling to Madjarac. Madjarac toe poked the ball over to Emilia Jonsson who slid it underneath Kitson as she dove to her right to put the Blue Raiders up 3-1.
Lindsey Wilson had 11 shots in the first half with six on goal compared to four shots by the Bulldogs with two on goal.
The second half began with heavy pressure from the Bulldog offense for the first 20 minutes. Blue Raider goalkeeper Johanna Henriksson was forced to make a pair of saves in that stretch, once ranging to her left to knock a shot down and once she was forced to tip the ball up off the crossbar and over the net on a free kick.
Lindsey Wilson was able to stifle the Cumberland offensive attack by tacking on another goal in the 66th minute.
Following a throw in, Perez kicked a ball deep into the box to Madjarac. Madjarac chipped the ball just high enough over the charging Bulldog keeper. She then raced past the keeper and put the ball into the open net to make it 4-1.
Karin Bernet got in on the offensive attack in the 74th minute. She served a high-soaring ball from near the sideline of midfield to Kander in the box, who headed it over a charging Kitson into the back of the net for the 5-1 lead.
The Blue Raiders added a final goal in the 86th minute as Jonsson and Vig played a give-and-go inside the box. Vig fed the ball to Jonsson who passed it back to Vig as she slotted home the shot in the lower left of the net for the 6-1 lead.
Lindsey Wilson outshot Cumberland by a 22-10 mark on the day with a 12-7 shot on goal advantage.
Henriksson allowed the one goal, just her eighth of the season, while making a season-high six saves.
Kitson took the loss making six saves while allowing all six goals.
Lindsey Wilson head coach Drew Burwash expressed his enthusiasm with his team's performance today.
"What I've learned about this group is their resilience," Burwash said. "They've been through a lot of adversity this year whether it be injuries or other tough situations, but all along we continued to work and stick together as a team."
"Early on in the game they created opportunities and we made a mistake that they took advantage of. But this group did not give up or give in and continued to fight and we bounced back with two quick goals."
"Overall it was a great group effort from the players on top, to the midfield and the back row," Burwash said. "Madjarac did outstanding for us being available in the middle. We were able to play balls into her and we got some great runs from our outside players."
"They had opportunities early on that we had to make adjustments for defensively and once we did, our back four were rock solid and the midfielders held it down great," said Burwash. "Give credit to Cumberland because you don't get to No. 1 without being a very, very good team."
"We stepped up to the challenge and played very well and today's performance was very encouraging to Coach McGuiness and I," Burwash said. "We'll take a little time to enjoy this victory, but we're not sitting back on it.
The Blue Raiders travel to NCAA Division II member Lee (Tenn.) on Nov. 3 for their regular-season finale. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
